The solid spine with five raised bands and leather label lettered in gilt is a lighter colour and soft suede in texture. Internally evidence of professional restoration of fro…nt and rear gutters; the front free endpaper with three paragraphs of writing, two in pen, one in pencil, dated 1933 . The lightly soiled engraved frontis has six bookworm holes partly affecting pages as far as the letter G (alphabetical); spotty title page chipped on edges and a 1 cm x 5 mm scribble near rmiddle; preliminary pages soiled as far as 'Ale' and generally clean and unmarked thereafter. Unpaginated. Frontis + 12 folding plates. Last entry: 'Zylosteum' followed by grubby six page Latin Index, then nine page index of plants mentioned, one page ad (with short edge tear) + two page list of plants engraved and described. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

The majority of the maps were created by Emanuel Bowen, reprinted from earlier editions, with new some new additions by Herman Moll, including a good map of America, and one showing the west and south coast of Australia with parts of Tasmania and New Zealand. Uniform binding. Seven compartment spine with 6 raised ribs. Compartment 2 contains a red leather label with gilt short title and decorations, compartment 3 a black leather label with gilt volume number and decorations. Double line gilt border on the front and back boards. Black dentelle pattern along the edges. Head, foot, and fore edge stained red. Title page printed in black and red. Text printed in two columns. Text block condition: volume I -- mild brown toning appropriate for its age, minor foxing throughout, maps/plates are bright and undamaged, water stain in the bottom corner of the fore edge of the last leaf and back flyleaf; volume II --ÂÂmild brown toning appropriate for its age, minor foxing throughout, maps/plates are bright and undamaged, small hole in the S section of the index, and the plate list is creased with a 3 cm enclosed tear near the gutter. Binding condition: both volumes are rubbed and worn on the spine and boards. Bumped/frayed corners. Exposed board edges in places. Spines flaking slightly. The leather of the hinges is cracked, but the bands are still pliable. Binding is strong and square.   Provenance: this copy appears to have been in the possession of Sampson Eardley (Gideon), 1st Baron Eardley, FRS (1744-1824), banker and politician, based on the bookplates. Interestingly, this copy has two armorial bookplates, one pasted on top of the other: one from before Sampson changed his surname to Eardley and was made a baron in 1789, and one after with a baron coronet added to the crest. Sampson was made a baronet in 1759 at age 14 due to his father's lobbying. He served as a Tory MP in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1770 - 1802. Sampson's father, Sampson Gideon Sr., was a Jewish banker based in the City of London, though Sampson Jr. and his sisters were raised Christian like their mother. Overall condition: Very good. This copy is bright, and complete. Care should be taken when handling due to the weight of the volume. Ref: Sabin 30483; Brunet III, 49: "Collection Estimà e.".

The books include the final edits and comments made by Pope on his deathbed. The books are fully bound in leather. The morroco spine has gilt decoration and titl…ing. The books are serene and dignified. The covers of all the volumes have have wear from shelving and storage but this adds to their character rather than affecting the security or aspect. The spines are strong, genial, august. They have five ridges, six panels. The pages for all volumes have printer markings at the feet of the pages. Printing impressions are fresh. The contents throughout all of the books are in very, very good condition. They are bright and jejeune - startlingly, excitingly so considering their age. Volume 1: Juvenile Poems. The boards have wear to the faces and shelving nudging to the corners. They are firm and tight. Inside, the handpressed paper is firm and looks fresh. The font is clear. Volume 2: Translations and Imitations. Once again the boards are sturdy and sound. The edges and faces have some wear and scuffing. They are assured. Inside, the pages are thrillingly clean and pleasant. Volume 3: Moral Essays. The boards have some mild wear to the edges and corners. The faces have scuffing. They are healthy and hale. Inside, the frontis pages have some light storage marks. Once again, the pages are happily clear and comfortable. They are thick and tight. Volume 4: Satires, &c. The boards tidier than those preceding and succeeding. They are genial and benign with some surface shelving scuffing and wear. They are also healthy and wise. The pages are deliciously clean. Volume 5: The Dunciad in four books. The boards of this volume are much worn from storage. They are however, secure and experienced. The frontis and end papers have some light storage marks and wear. Inside, the engravings are lively, elegant, as if new. The pages are tight, clean, smart and full of energy. Volume 6: Miscellaneous Pieces in Verse and Prose. The boards are full of character and bear their wear with solemnity and dignity. Once again, inside, the pages are as if they are fresh from the printer. The pages are tight, clear, very certain. Volume 7: Being the First of his Letters. The boards mildly worn and scuffed from storage and shelving. They are solid and sure. Inside, the frontispages have very light storage marks. The paper has barely aged and is pleasingly firm. Volume 8: Being the Second of his Letters. The boards of this volume are noble and handsome. There is little wear and such as there be is surface. Inside, the pages are obliging in their generosity. Clean and clear and neat. Volume 9: Being the Third of his Letters. Also included is Pope's Last Will and Testament. The boards have smears of wear and scuffing. They are yet benign and competent. The pages are clean, certain, congenial and calm. This is a remarkable set of books principally due to the excellence, freshness and tidiness of the pages and paper. Johnson.A very attractive copy of the most popular work of Philip Miller (1691-1771), the foremost British gardener of the eighteenth century, with five folding plates of botanical illustrations. 'Miller's Gardener's Kalendar, published in fifteen editions between 1732 and 1765, catered for the modest gardener who needed practical advice [Miller] produced a work not only portable, but also at a price to suit those who could not afford a larger book. At four shillings a copy it came within the purse of most and indeed was judged to be "a manual to the whole kingdom". Its aim was to bring into "one easy and concise view" what might be of use to those "hindered by other avocations from bestowing much time in the study of this delightful and innocent work" Under each month could be found directions for work to be done in the kitchen garden with notes on its produce, the pleasure or flower garden with plants then in flower, and the greenhouse and stove with their plants in bloom' (Le Rougetel, pp. 1013). A sharply observed critique of the governments and institutions of Europe and the Mediterranean (encompassing the Ottoman Empire, including Jerusalem, and North Africa). It is written in the format of an epistolary novel, consisting of two hundred letters between three named rabbis, giving the author the opportunity to make detached comments on religious belief and practice in the Christian world, e.g. when he is discussing clerical attire: 'The Dress and Countenance of the Presbyterians, especially of their Preachers, answers exactly their true Character; they walk gravely, and with a very stiff Air; their Heads and Faces are in a manner hid by overgrown Hats, and their Shoulders covered with a most enormous large Cloak.' D'Argens also discusses the art and culture of his native France and adds some interesting observations on beliefs in vampirism in the Belgrade area.Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d' Argens (1704-71) was a French philosopher and writer, born in Aix-en-Provence. He spent many years in exile, as an opponent of the Catholic Church and all forms of intolerance and religious oppression. He lived a year in Constantinople and then moved to Amsterdam, where he wrote the Lettres juives (first published in The Hague, 1735-37) and Lettres chinoises (1739-42) before spending the greater part of his career at the Berlin court of Frederick the Great of Prussia. He was a friend of Voltaire, Casanova and other notables and wrote several other philosophical works, in addition to six novels. The first English translation was published 1739-40 and the second edition in 1744. The subversive nature of the work made quite an impact and there were several translations and numerous pirated editions in French.
