In so doing, they often refer to the 'authoritative' opinion of Heinz Guderian and other German generals. Von Kleist, for example, is stated to have once referred to the T-34 as 'the finest tank in the world'. But, as Dmitry Zubov sets out to explore in this book, was this the true picture? The reality of the summer of 1941, following Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union, Operation Barbarossa, revealed that it took the Wehrmacht only a couple of months to turn Stalin's tank armada into little more than a pile of scrap metal. Despite this inauspicious beginning to its combat service, the myth of the T-34's 'invincibility' was already being born. Little attention, however, has been focuse…d on the Luftwaffeâs transport aircraft which played a vital role in supplying German forces in every theatre.In early May 1940, the battle of Norway was nearing its climax, but General Eduard Dietlâs 3rd Jäger division was blocked by the Allies in the Narvik area. Only the Luftwaffe could provide effective assistance to the encircled troops. The special purpose groups KGr.zbV107 and KGr.zbV108 were ordered to supply the division by air. Transports delivered ammunition, food, and even boots for German sailors who found themselves on land.This was the first of a number of occasions in which the Luftwaffeâs transport Gruppen, often equipped with the slow, but reliable Junkers 52, created an âair bridgeâ to supply troops cut off or surrounded by the enemy. The transport Gruppen had previously been involved in supporting the advance of German forces during the Polish campaign, this being followed by the capture of Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Greece.During Operation Barbarossa, German troops were dispersed over the vast expanses of Russia. It was a country without roads where the normal supply by trucks and trains to the troops was difficult and sometimes impossible. The Soviet history of the Second World War, written under the conditions of a totalitarian regime, reflected all its features, with the result that it includes solid sets of patriotic fables that have no connection with reality. Many of the events of the war were distorted beyond recognition… or even made up from beginning to end. Archives containing original documents were available only to selected, specially verified KGB 'historians' who presented only the version of the war that was acceptable to the Soviet regime. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the process of declassifying archives and gaining wide access to information gradually began to reveal the terrible truth of the crimes of the Soviet regime. One of which, of course, was the incompetent leadership of the Red Army, which led to massive loss of life across the military and civilians alike.
