Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, journal issue in original printed wrappers, of the invention of the maser. MASER is an acronym for Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. In a maser, atoms or molecules are 'pumped,' so that more of them are at higher energy levels than at the ground state, thus creating a 'population inversion'. This results in a sudden burst of 'coherent' light as the atoms discharge in a rapid chain reaction ('coherent' means that the light waves all have the same frequency and a constant phase difference, unlike the light from a light bulb which contains waves of many different frequencies and varying phase differences). This process of 'stimulated emission' was first predicted by Einstein in 1916, but it would take nearly 40 years before scientists would be able to amplify those emissions, proving Einstein correct and putting masers (and their optical analogues, lasers) on the path to becoming the powerful and ubiquitous tools they are today. Charles Hard Townes of Columbia University in New York conceived the idea for the maser while sitting on a park bench in Washington on April 26, 1951, but it was not until 1954 that Townes, working with Herbert J. Zeiger and graduate student James P. Gordon, demonstrated the first operational maser at Columbia University (reported in the offered paper). This ammonia maser, the first device based on Einstein's predictions, produced the first amplification and generation of electromagnetic waves by stimulated emission. The maser radiated at a wavelength of a little more than 1 cm and generated approximately 10 nW of power. Townes was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics for his 'fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser-principle'. He shared the prize with Moscow researchers Nikolai G. Basov and Alexander M. Prokhorov who, in 1955, developed the important 'three-level' method of producing population inversion by 'pumping' with a powerful auxiliary source of radiation. Large 8vo, pp. [ii], 309. Original printed wrappers (spine sunned and with a tiny bit of wear at the head).…

Añadir al carrito1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF VAN HOVE'S PAPER PRESENTING A CENTRAL QUANTITY IN THE STUDY OF FLUCTUATIONS, THE DENSITY-DENSITY SPACETIME CORRELATION THAT HAS COME TO BE KNOWN AS THE VAN HOVE FUNCTION. Here Van Hove offers "a natural time-dependent generalization for the well-known pair distribution function g(r) of systems of interacting particles. The pair distribution in space and time thus defined, denoted by G(r,t), gives rise to a very simple and entirely general expression for the angular and energy distribution of [the] Born approximation scattering by the system" (Van Hove). Van Hove's paper is considered seminal. Another way of stating this is to say that the Van Hove formula proveides the relation between the cross-sections "for scattiner of slow neutrons by an assembly of nuclei and space-time correlation functions for hte motion of the scattering system. [His papers shows that] the Born approximation scattering cross section can be expressed in terms of the four-dimensional Fourier transform of a pair distribution function depending on a space vector and a time variable. The formula. provided a convenient method of analyzing the properties of slow neutron scattering by systems of particles, of light scattering by media, etc. The advantage of using [it] for analysis of scattering data is its compact form and intuitively clear physical meaning" (Berne, B. J. Time Dependent Properties of Condensed Media). ALSO PRESENT, Charles Townes' Nobel Prize winning construction of the first amplification and generation of electromagnetic waves by stimulation - the first ammonia maser. Townes coined the word 'maser' for this device, an acronym for microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. Quarto (11.25 x 8.25 inches; 275 x 200mm). Original wraps. Ex-libris bearing a light "Duplicate Reserve Collection" stamp on the front wrap and two equally light small date stamps on the rear wrap. Añadir al carrito1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS OF THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST AMPLIFICATION AND GENERATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES BY STIMULATED EMISSION -- THE FIRST AMMONIA MASER. Townes coined the word 'maser' for this device, an acronym for microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. The device they built "used stimulated emission in a stream of energized ammonia molecules to produce amplification of microwaves at a frequency of about 24.0 gighertz" (Wikipedia). "Einstein suggested 'that under the proper circumstances, atoms could release excess energy as light -- either spontaneously or when stimulated by light. In 1951, Charles H. Townes, then at Columbia University in New York City, thought of a way to generate stimulated emission at microwave frequencies. "In the 1930s scientists could have built a laser. They had the optical techniques and theoretical knowledge -- but nothing pushed these together. Charles Townes od Columbia University had studies molecules as a physicist in the 1930s, and during the war he had worked on radar as an electronics engineer. The Office of Naval Research pressed him and other physicists to put their heads together and invent a way to make powerful beams of radiation at ever shorter wavelengths. In 1951 he found a solution. Under the right conditions -- say, inside a resonating cavity like the ones used to generate radar waves --- the right kind of collection of molecules might generate radiation all on its own. He was applying an engineer's insights to a physicists's atomic systems. Townes gave the problem to Herbert Zeiger, a postdoctoral student, and James P. Gordon, a graduate student. By 1954 they had the device working [this paper being the detailed description of what they built]. Townes called it a MASER, for "Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" (AIP, Laserfest). Townes was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work in 1964. ALSO INCLUDED is Van Hove's paper presenting a central quantity in the study of fluctuations, the density-density spacetime correlation that has come to be known as the Van Hove function.
