One of the first books on the subject, Zacchia's treatise on wages was originally published in 1656. It was an authority into the eighteenth century. As noted in a recent study, it "represents a very rich source for understanding early modern labour relations and it allows us to reconstruct the doctrine of salary during the two centuries after the Counter-Reformation." Grounded in Roman and Canon law, it distinguishes different forms of wages and the authorities that set them: law, custom, contract, a monarch or a judge. Its scope includes broader economic issues, such as the relationship between wage and the value of the worker and the effect of wages on the cost of living. It also considers, in a few sections, the issues related to usury. The main text is followed by a substantial collection of relevant decisions of the Rota Romana, the highest appellate tribunal of the Catholic Church. It was originally published as an independent work in 1664. The former the owner of this book was Ludovico Berinzaghi of Lodi, Lombardy, Italy.
