"John Locke (29 Aug 1632 - 28 October 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of the Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "father of liberalism". Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Francis Bacon, Locke is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American Revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence. Internationally, Locke's political-legal principles continue to have a profound influence on the theory and practice of limited representative government and the protection of basic rights and freedoms under the rule of law." from Wikipedia. The essays in this collection illustrate the interdisciplinary approach to the history of ideas fostered by the Journal of the History of Ideas. Science, philosophy and religion were closely connected in the 17th and 18th centuries, and common threads run through all the articles. A number of essays revolve around Locke: the implications of his doctrines for religion, and their relation to and support of the new science; several of these articles refer to Descartes, Leibniz andHume. There are essays on optics and vision in the work of Berkeley, Reid and Newton, and on the relation between biology and physiology, especially as these disciplines contribute to the science of man. The authors include HENRY GUERLAC, MARGARET C. JACOB, SHIRLEY ROE, L. LAUDAN, NICHOLAS JOLLEY, JAMES FORCE, G. A. J. ROGERS and CATHERINE WILSON. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean. Record # 387394.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Preface, Notes, Index; vii, 278 pages. The original dark blue cloth is in excellent shape with gilt lettering in black title-block still bright on the spine. The dustjacket shows only light wear and retains its price, though the flap's bottom corner is clipped. Endpapers are pristine and the top edge of textblock is colored blue-green. The interior is bright, but my philosopher-father has left pencil marks in three of the essays, principally in "The State of Nature and the Nature of Man," by Hans Aarsleff. The other 10 essays remain perfectly clean. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] Contributors: Hans Aarsleff, Richard Ashcraft, James L. Axtell, Edmond S. de Beer, Rosalie Colie, John Dunn, Peter Laslett, W. von Leyden, Raymond Polin, Gordon J. Schochet, and M. Seliger. "One advantage of these essays is their having been written by persons from the different fields of Locke's interests. The polymath that Locke was in his own century may now be best revealed from the different perspectives of our academic disciplines." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
