Remaining interior in very good condition.; "A large collection of sketches by SHIBATA Zeshin was transferred to The University Art Museum, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1975, by the daughter of Zeshin's third son UMEZAWA Ryushin. SHIBATA Zeshin was born in Ryogoku in 1807, and was active as a painter of the Maruyama Shijo school and as a makie lacquer artist during the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. He was one of the first Imperial Court Artists, and is one of the most talented among the Japanese artists of 19th century. However, because a great amount of his works were burnt or have left Japan, he was not known very well generally. The main sketches by SHIBATA Zeshin in our museum collection are the 112 draft sketches of the Chigusa-no-ma ceiling in the Meiji Palace, 10 sketches of the Sugito-e (paintings on the cedar doors) in the Meiji Palace, and his 95 sketchbooks. It is collection of high quality and a condensation of Zeshin's art. His expressions of plants depicted by flowing and accurate brushwork, supported by his keen observant eye, are first class art works worthy of appreciation equally to great paintings. Furthermore, they have a charm as reference material for various contemporary designs. It is a great pleasure for me as the director of The University Art Museum, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, to be able to publish this collection of SHIBATA Zeshin's designs and sketches, based on the results of recent research by our staff." foreword, March, 2005, TAKEUCHI Junichi, Director, The University Art Museum, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
