Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. This copy feels unread. The only book that comprehensively covers the fortunes of Chinese immigrants in New Zealand from the earliest encounters in the mid-1800s, to the present day (including transnationalism) offering valuable data and expert viewpoints for international study and comparision.… A timely book that will strike chords with the Chinese communiities in Australia, Canada and the United states, because of the strikingly similar expieriences of members of those communities at the hands of colonial governments and sometimes xenophobic societies.

Bookseller sticker glued to the rear of the back cover top left side.; Catalogue from an exhibition presented by The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and The Urban Council, Hong Kong, January 26 to April 2, 1979, at the Hong Kong Museum of Art.; "The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong first came into existence in 1974, and this is the third exhibition mounted in Hong Kong by the society and the second to be held in the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The exhibition on this occasion is devoted to Chinese and South-East Asian ceramics, mainly of the varieties used as trade wares in centuries past.Sir John Addis has honoured the society by writing the introduction to the Chinese ceramics section of the exhibition, which has been supplemented by essays on specific subjects by Dr Ip Yee, Dr Adrian Joseph, Dr Philip Wen-chee Mao and myself; and Roxanna M. Brown has generously consented to write the introduction to the South-East Asian wares section. Sir John's encouragement of the society from its beginnings has been most welcome, and we are particularly pleased that both he and Ms Brown should consent to write introductions in view of their well-known expertise in many of the types of ceramics included. Considerable advances have been made over the past ten years in our understanding of the types of wares exhibited as a result partly of excavations in many parts of South-East Asia and elsewhere notably of the shipwrecks off the coast of South Korea at Sinan and in the Gulf of Siam and partly from an intensive study of the wares themselves. Since the Manila Trade Pottery Seminar of 1968 numerous exhibitions of trade wares have been organized in many parts of the world, and a symposium was held recently at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during which provenances and dates were suggested for whole classes of early Sung ceramics, thus adding considerably to our knowledge of the wares of this early period. It is hoped that this exhibition will give new stimulus to interest in the subject and provide new collectors with a basic knowledge of the types of wares which can occasionally still be found today in the markets of South-East Asia. The diverse pieces being shown have been drawn almost without exception from Hong Kong collections and whilst the exhibition does not pretend to be comprehensive, examples are included of most of the main types of ceramic wares commonly traded in the Far East in the period prior to 1660." excerpt from the foreword by Brian S. McElney, President, The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, September 1978.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. The significance of jade in Chinese culture can never be over-emphasized. It was customary for the ancient Chinese to compare the qualities of jade to the virtues of a gentleman with special reference to its qualities of refinement and durabilit…y. According to the Book of Rites, jade was described as to have ten virtues, hence it was very much valued by the Chinese. This book was produced to coincide with the 8th Festival of Asian Arts held between 21/10/83 and 24/12/83.The book is in very nice condition EXCEPT for where the pages at the back are slightly bowed from the previous owner storing a small catalogue there.

Catalogue from an exhibition in The 3rd Festival of Asian Art presented by The Urb…an Council Hong Kong, 1978.; Part II 351 pages with black and white illustrations, 1982, ISBN 9622150411.; Used books with signs of wear on the exterior and dust jackets, that have signs of wear, are faded on spine and show edge wear. Volume 1 as a few pages slightly bent on the top right side. Remaining interior in good condition.; "Although bamboo is a common plant found in many parts of the world, few peoples have taken such a keen interest in its use as a medium for artistic expression as the Chinese. Their fondness for bamboo has frequently been expressed in poetry, painting, calligraphy, carving and many other art forms. Since the Sung dynasty (960-1279), the Chinese have written of bamboo as the symbol of the "true gentleman", or scholar possessing the virtues of endurance, righteousness, humility and integrity. Chinese scholars always enjoy the presence of bamboo, whether it be the growing plant, or bamboo in painting, or an object made from part of the plant. It is not difficult, therefore, to preceive why bamboo carving has its own special significance in the Chinese art scene and why this art form was so closely associated with Chinese scholars. In fact, most of the carvings in the exhibition as illustrated in this volume were once the companions of Chinese scholars in their elegant studios. This first exhibition of bamboo carving, has been made possible only through the untiring efforts and support of our Museum Adviser, Dr. Ip Yee. We are deeply in debt to him not only for the generous loan of his fine collection of bamboo carvings, but also for the expert advice to the preparation of the exhibition and compilation of this handbook." excerpt from the acknowledgments, Part I, by Laurence C.S. Tam, September, 1978.; "In this volume the attempt is made to provide some basic facts, in English and in Chinese, on Chinese bamboo carvers and their carvings gleaned from Chinese literary records, and to do so in a manner that will facilitate reference. A list of 300 bamboo carvers has been compiled, and the sources for each are indicated after each biography for the use of those who may wish to research further. In order to facilitate positive identification of artists among the spectrum of their names, and pseudonyms, and other assumed names, a special index has been compiled with direct reference to the biographical notes of each artist. Part I of this book attempted a brief summary of the history of bamboo carving, and there, it was noted that the subject has so far been little studied. Here, in order to facilitate further study and research, a compilation of available material has been made, and the resulting three lists show the known items of bamboo carving of different periods, with the source of each recorded item indicated. These lists have been made up to enable easy access to the basic information on the earliest known items of bamboo carving, together with the recorded examples by known carvers and also those so far anonymous. In the exhibition 'Chinese Bamboo Carving', there were two hundred and eleven items on display. These were all fine works selected from collections from many parts of the world. All are illustrated in Part I of this book. Many other examples of fine bamboo carving exist in local Hong Kong collections, and these are now collected in this present volume in order to provide further visual examples of forms, techniques, pictorial motifs, composition, and even dating criteria." excerpt from Preface, Part II, by Laurence C.S. Tam, Curator, Hong Kong Museum of Art.
