Curators and editors: Refik Akyuz, Serdar Darendeliler. [Exhibition catalogue]. Istanbul: Pera Muzesi, 2022. 4to., 245 p., color ills. Turkish and English. Paperback. New ISBN: 9786057120540 CATALOG: Photographs KEYWORDS: Istanbul - Constantinople photography Istanbuls Today is a photography exhibition that offers a comprehensive look into contemporary visual narratives from various Istanbuls that are shaped and experienced concurrently with the hope of creating a layered and innovative view of Istanbul's present. The exhibition, including thematic urban landscapes, provides a viewing space for the latest unexhibited works of 11 photographers who live in Istanbul with varying relations with the city and who create art in their own unique styles. These themes range from the city's topography of emptiness, loneliness, eeriness and incongruousness to its socio-political activities, the migration issue that has become more evident in the last decade to young individuals who took refuge in Istanbul to live without being labeled as the other, the Istanbul Canal project, which is one of the mega projects in Turkiye whose numbers have increased exponentially in recent years, to the practice of interpreting the city as a personal interaction space, and works dealing with the ordinarily extraordinary oddities of the city. Curated by Refik Akyuz and Serdar Darendeliler, Istanbuls Today offers an attempt at a critical and creative visual interpretation of the period we live in, while also creating a space of discovery for photographers who have crossed paths with the current state of Istanbul, which has been photographed with passion, curiosity and excitement throughout history. Thus, it captures the diversity of photographers today. Istanbuls Today is enriched with articles penned for the catalogue by seven different academics, researchers and writers, who work, do research, think or create fiction about the subjects covered in the exhibition, inspired by the works of the exhibited artists. Artists: Silva Bingaz, Osman Bozkurt, Ci Demi, Kivilcim S. Condición: New. Out of Ink: Interpretations from Chinese Contemporary Art explores the essential ideals of the ink painting tradition as manifest in the work of 13 contemporary artists at work in China today. Their art does not necessarily rely upon conventional materials ink, paper, or brush but encapsulates the cultural spirit of ink. The experimental forms of expression that underscores their practice are a prism through which to understand how artists are rethinking the conventions of ink to forge new ties to the present cultural context, and enrich this weighty tradition in the process. The exhibition curated by Karen Smith echoes content familiarly seen in ink painting, such as landscapes or natural forms, as single or juxtaposed elements from the natural world, as well as the role of calligraphy. Participating artists are Xu Bing, Chen Haiyan, Jian-Jun Zhang, Xing Danwen, Luo Yongjin, Sun Yanchu, Qiu Anxiong, Li Ming, Xu Hongming, Chen Guangwu, Liang Wei, Zhou Fan, and Tang Bohua. Condición: New. The Time Needs Changing exhibition questions our geo-politically controlled notions of time. The three artists in this show give alternatives to linear time, which is currently strictly enforced by the power structures under which we live. The works of Cao Fei, Nilbar Güres and the Raqs Media Collective release the shackles of time, and suggest alternative and parallel paths. The exhibition presents a thought-scape that draws from three different parts of the world; China, Turkey and India. The artists explore time through drawing, video, photography, installation and new media. Time is one of the many subjects addressed by the participants of the exhibition. Their works help us better understand our relations with ourselves, as well as those with the world around us. Nilbar Güres questions masculine linear time; Cao Fei offers us greater control in a world where real and virtual intersect; and the Raqs Media Collective liberates time itself in its works that associate memory with different experiences. Editors: Translator: 103 pages.…
