John Xantus was a member of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Boston Athenaeum. This firsthand account of Southern California in the mid 19th covers lives of the native Indians, the California economy and natural history. János, an Hungarian ex-patriot, serving with the US Army when undertaking this journey to Los Angeles, San Fernando, San Bernardino, Mojave, Baja California, and encountering the native Tejon Indian tribes in the San Joaquin valley. The report includes a listing of the Tejon numerals and a vocabulary of their language. The book triggered some controversy due to its illustrations, said to be appropriated with slight alterations from R. H. Kern in an earlier report of a U.S. Army topographical mission by Lorenzo Sitgreaves: "The Report of an Expedition down the Zuni and Colorado Rivers." Binding with some wear along edges, light water-staining on front cover and rubbed. Stamped "Lajos Pokorny," pharmacist in Losonc, on front free endpaper. Block with occasional light imperfections, few thumbprints in lower foredge corners, and minor green watercolor spot in margin of page 179. From the Smithsonian Institution Archives: "János Xántus (1825-1894) was a Hungarian exile and zoologist who collected specimens in America and Asia. He was born in Csokonya, Hungary, on October 5, 1825. He initially studied law, but joined the Hungarian Army after Hungary attempted to break from Austria. Xántus was captured and imprisoned, managing to escape to Saxony a year later. He came to the United States in 1851 and began traveling across the United States working in a variety of jobs to earn a living. Xántus enlisted in the US Army in 1855. During his time in the service he began collecting natural history specimens. With the encouragement of Army Medical staff member, he began collecting for the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. He began a correspondence with Spencer F. Baird, Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, in 1857. With Baird's encouragement, Xántus collected extensively in California during the mid-1850's for the US National Museum, while he was stationed at Fort Tejon, California, as a hospital steward. Upon leaving Fort Tejon he was granted a discharge and explored Cape San Lucas, again collecting for the Baird. He eventually returned to Hungary in 1864. Xantus served as the Director of the Zoological Garden of Budapest and as Curator of Ethnography at the Hungarian National Museum. He passed away in Budapest in 1894".

Hungarian Naturalist in the West With Excellent Tinted Lithographs and a Folding Map J nos X ntus, the author of this beautifully illustrated account of 19th century California, was a pioneering Hungarian naturalist and. Octavo. Original pictorial boards, expertly and tastefully rebacked with new linen cloth spine, original spine backstrip laid down over the new spine. Some moderate edge rubbing to binding. Endpapers renewed. Occasional minor fox mark (mostly marginal and mostly to text leaves, the plates exhibiting very minor, almost negligible, marginal foxing). Neat 19th century owner's initial purple ink stamp on titlepage and on verso of plates and map. [10],191, [3, ads] pages. Title page vignette and numerous woodcuts in the text. 8 tinted lithograph plates (including frontispiece) and folding map (12 3/4 x 12 5/8 inches). Complete. Hungarian Naturalist in the West With Excellent Tinted Lithographs and a Folding Map J nos X ntus, the author of this beautifully illustrated account of 19th century California, was a pioneering Hungarian naturalist and ornithologist who traveled extensively in the American West. Presented in a series of letters, the present volume purports to describe Alta and Baja California, incorporating interesting descriptions of California's natural history, geology and Native American tribes. Some of these descriptions are now regarded as fanciful or plagiarized from other sources. Places described include Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino, San Fernando Valley, the Sierra Nevada mountains, Mojave, and Fort Tejon. The author also describes several places in Baja California, including La Paz and Loreto. Pages 58-60 contain a Tejon Indian language vocabulary. The excellent lithograph plates, also either fanciful or taken from other earlier publications, depict a range of scenes: Mission San Fernando, Indians working in a blacksmith shop at the mission, an Indian woman working a loom, Indians at Tejon, a vista of the Sierra Nevada, a view of a large terraced native building at La Joya. Several of these views are actually derived from James W. Abert's classic illustrated report of the Southwest (1848), compare, for instance, Abert's Pueblo de Santo Domingo and Acoma views. The numerous in text wood engravings also deserve mention: A Silla. Traveling a silla in California, showing Californios being carried in specially modified chairs on the backs of Native Americans. Santa Clara waterfall. Los Angeles native on a burro (repeated on the front cover). Los Angeles native man and woman. Cave art petroglyphs at Tejon a pearl-laden shell from La Paz The nice folding lithograph map shows California and Baja California, from San Francisco south to Cabo San Lucas. Wheat points out some curious aspects of this map: it shows Santa Cruz where San Jose should be, with San Jose a few miles to the north. Napa is located at the site of Berkeley, with Sonoma due east of Stockton, and Mariposa due east from there, near the Kern River. An earlier publication by X ntus appeared in 1858, but that work was apparently not authorized by the author. The earlier volume, titled Levelei Ejszakamerikabol. described X ntus's overland travels in the western United States. Howes called the earlier 1858 publication, which was edited by a purportedly "incompetent" Istvan Prepost, an unauthorized edition of Xantus' letters. X ntus was a participant in the unsuccessful Hungarian Revolution of 1848, after which he came to America as a refugee in 1851. In the mid-1850s he traveled across the U.S. to California. As a member of the U.S. Army's Topographical Corps railroad survey in Southern California, at Los Angeles and Fort T jon from 1857 to 1859, he was able to collect s. Book.

Xantus states that letters edited by Istvan Prepost which appeared in 1858 were not intended for publication and were published as a result of a misunderstanding. Añadir al carritoHungarian Janos Xantus was one of the pioneering ornithologists of California. The present book is the second of two Hungarian publications by Xantus, providing an account of his travels in California and Baja. The other volume, LEVELEI EJSZAKAMERIKABOL., was also published in Budapest (in 1858) and describes his travels throughout the United States. Howes calls that volume, edited by the "incompetent" Istvan Prepost, an "unauthorized" edition of Xantus' letters describing his travels in North America. The letters in this volume focus on California, Baja and Alta, and provide descriptions of California's geology and climate, native Indians, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Fernando, Mojave, Fort Tejon, and several places in Baja, including La Paz and Loreto. The plates show Mission San Fernando, Indians working in a blacksmith shop at the mission, a female Indian working a loom, Indians at Tejon, a vista of the Sierra Nevada, a view of a large terraced building at La Jolla, and more. The map shows California from San Francisco south to the tip of Baja. Involved in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, Xantus came to the U.S. at the end of 1851 as a political refugee and worked as a topographer on the Pacific Railroad Survey, then as a member of the U.S. Coast Survey. He was stationed in California during the coastal survey, and while there made valuable collections of birds for the Smithsonian Institution, including many new species, some of which were named after him. Later he was attached to the U.S. Navy and commanded an expedition to make meteorological observations in certain parts of the Pacific Ocean. During the latter service, which concluded in 1861, he discovered eighty-nine islands and sand banks. He was appointed U.S. consul at Manzanillo, Mexico, and led a scientific research party into the Sierra Madre before permanently returning to his native Hungary in 1864. Not in Pilling or Ayer, despite the linguistic content. The Streeter copy sold for $225 to unknown bidders and is now in a private collection in California. HOWES X2, "aa." GRAFF 4785. COWAN, p.697.
