Contemporary sheep with recent calf rebacking, lettering piece, blind fillets and gilt publication date to spine, corners and hinges mended. Light rubbing and scuffing to boards, faint illegible inscription to front board. Light toning to interior, offsetting to margins of endleaves, "Ingilby 1782" to head of title page, "Pegges Curialia" in same hand to rear free endpaper. $450. * Later edition. The first English annotated legal bibliography, Worrall's remains an important reference due to its excellent annotations, many gathered from leading authorities of the time, and comparative bibliographical information. The first edition was published in 1731. It was followed by several later editions by Worrall through 1768. The 1788 edition is in two books, the second entirely by Brooke. It was followed by supplementary volumes by Brooke, John Rider and John Clarke through 1808. The present copy probably belonged to the English politician and bibliophile Sir John Ingilby [1758-1815] of Ripley Castle, Yorkshire, who was created a Baronet in 1781. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire from 1781-1782, a Member of the Parliament (for East Retford) from 1790-1796 and a Fellow of the Royal Society (elected 1793). The annotation to the rear free endpaper is a reference to Samuel Pegge's Curialia: Or an Historical Account of Some Branches of the Royal Household. &c. (1st ed. 1782). Worrall, believed to be the first law bookseller, issued the first edition in 1731 and published several later editions. This copy may have been owned by John Aspinall [1716-1784], a lawyer and owner of Standen Hall in Clitheroe, Lancashire. He was a serjeant-at-law and served on the Commission of the Peace for York and Lancashire. The sixth edition is scarce.
