Hardcover. First Edition. Complete 9-volume set. 8vo. Various color buckrams and cloths, with spine lettering in gilt or black. 320pp, 284pp, 296pp, 316pp, 320pp, 328pp, 324pp, 332pp, 316pp. Illustrations, checkerboard graphics. Overall very good. First issue (Volume 1, Number 1) only is good only -- quite age toned and edgeworn, printed on cheap stock -- while the other 107 issues all include the green heavy stock outer wrappers bound in; occasional margin comments in ink or pencil. Tight and nice full set -- 108 issues bound in 9 volumes -- of this entertaining, highly-regarded monthly by the well-known Hoosier checkerist. The first volume (only) was titled "Our Checker Player by YOU and ME" before "Wood's Checker Player" was adopted. Volume 3 is misbound (Numbers 6-12 preceding Numbers 1-6) though complete. Laid into Volume 1 is a mimeographed index for the first two volumes, while tipped into Volume 2 is a hand-typed index to that volume. As for the varying color bindings, either this is a pieced-together set or (more likely) checker enthusiast George E. Lane (who had his name embossed onto the front board of Volumes 5, 6 and 8) used different binderies and wasn't a stickler for consistency, as no two are bound alike! LOVELL 187.…
