Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Fair. Education by W. O. Lester Smith, published by Pelican in 1961, comes from that wonderfully earnest period when people still appeared to believe that education was something that could be examined, organised, improved and perhaps even understood if only enough sensible people in tweed jackets sat down and thought about it properly. This is a vintage Pelican study of education and the ideas, institutions and purposes surrounding it, written at a time when Britain was busy reconsidering what schools were actually for, who should have access to what sort of education, and whether the whole population might conceivably benefit from being taught things. Radical stuff. As with many Pelicans of the period, this was not intended as a decorative object for a fashionable coffee table. It was cheap, serious, accessible publishing for people who wanted to know something about the world without first enrolling at Oxford. The famous blue-spined Pelican series cheerfully tackled economics, politics, psychology, science, sociology and practically anything else that could be explained in a few hundred densely printed pages. Education is very much part of that tradition. Read today, a 1961 book on education inevitably has another layer of interest. It comes from a Britain of grammar schools, secondary moderns, expanding universities, post-war optimism and formidable committees producing reports about the nation?s children. Some ideas will feel surprisingly familiar; others may remind the reader that sixty-five years is quite a long time in educational policy, even if governments continue enthusiastically rediscovering many of the same problems. There is also something rather appealing about an era in which Penguin apparently assumed ordinary members of the public might voluntarily buy a paperback called Education , take it home, read it, and form considered opinions. Today we would presumably require a six-part podcast, an accompanying TikTok controversy and someone shouting about it on television. A good piece of social and educational history, therefore, as well as a useful example of classic Pelican publishing. Ideal for teachers, educational historians, collectors of old Penguins and Pelicans, students of post-war Britain, or anyone who enjoys discovering what intelligent people were worrying about in 1961. Condition: Fair. This is an old working paperback rather than a pristine collector?s trophy. Expect the normal evidence that it has survived since 1961: wear, ageing and the assorted indignities inflicted upon inexpensive paperbacks over more than six decades. It remains, however, a perfectly respectable survivor and has achieved something many educational theories have not: it is still here. No ISBN, because in 1961 books were apparently expected to manage without one. Sold by Crappy Old Books ? rescuing perfectly good old books from a world increasingly convinced that everything worth knowing was invented last Tuesday.…

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Good. Government of Education is one of those gloriously earnest mid-century paperbacks that strolls up, adjusts its spectacles, and announces: Right. Let?s talk about who runs the schools, why they run them, and what on earth they think they?re doing. This is the 1965 Pelican Books edition by W. O. Lester Smith (no ISBN ? because it comes from the pre-barcode age when books didn?t need an identity number, they just needed a sturdy spine and a sense of purpose), offered in Good condition by Crappy Old Books . Expect the usual honest signs of a book that?s lived a sensible life: a little shelf wear, some age-toning, perhaps a gently worked spine ? but still solid, readable, and perfectly capable of judging modern education debates with a raised eyebrow. Lester Smith?s subject sounds dry until you realise it?s basically the wiring diagram of society: how education is governed , by whom, through what structures, and with what consequences. This isn?t a fluffy hymn to inspiring teachers or a sentimental montage of children running through sunlit corridors. It?s the machinery: committees, policies, authorities, administrative logic, and the uneasy dance between ideals and budgets. In other words, the stuff that decides what ?education? actually becomes once it leaves the speeches and meets reality. Reading it now has a particular pleasure. It?s like opening a time capsule from an era when Britain could still write about schooling with confident seriousness, as though the system might be calmly steered by rational adults in suits. (Reader: the suits were real. The rationality varied.) It?s also a reminder that the arguments we have today about education ? control, standards, freedom, bureaucracy, purpose ? are not modern inventions. They?re perennial. We?ve just updated the acronyms and replaced some of the paperwork with PDFs nobody reads. This book is ideal for: Anyone who enjoys peering behind the curtain to see how ?public services? are actually stitched together Readers who like their social history served as policy anatomy rather than nostalgia People who have ever said ?Why can?t they just??? and would like a sobering explanation of why they never just? Condition: Good means it?s not pristine, and that?s fitting. Pelicans were made to be carried, argued with, and underlined by people who thought ideas mattered. This copy may show mild wear, but it remains a dependable, readable survivor from the age of robust paperback seriousness. From Crappy Old Books , where we love the kind of title that sounds like it should be dull? and then quietly reveals itself as a map of power, priorities, and the eternal problem of trying to improve the future using committees. Not a bedtime story. More like the instruction manual for the classroom you?re currently arguing about.…
