Decorative Cloth. Condición: Good. No Jacket. A good to very good copy in the original decorative cloth binding with numerous line drawings and 61 full page colour illustrations by Randolph Caldecott. Undated but probably late 1800's. Although the title page does not say so, this was the first collection of Caldecott's pictures and songs published by Warne, and includes John Gilpin, The House that Jack Built, Elegy on the death of a mad dog, Babes in the Wood, Three Jovial Huntsmen, Sing a Song for Sixpence, Queen of Hearts and the Farmer's Boy. The binding is in very good condition. It has a part impressed picture to the front board and part impressed gilt titles to the spine. The boards have beveled edges. There is some pulling to the spine and some edge wear. It is clean apart from a little marking to the back board. Internally it looks like the endpapers are much newer as they are plain and unmarked. Contents sound and generally clean. There is the odd mark and around 5 small repaired tears affecting the bottom page edge. There is some marking to the plain pages where a colour plate on the verso partly shows through - giving darker areas. Occasional light creasing to pages. Each story is separately paginated. Caldecott The Diverting History of John Gilpin Shewing how he went Farther than he intended, and came safe Home again is a comic ballad by William Cowper written in 1782. The ballad concerns a draper called John Gilpin who rides a runaway horse. Cowper heard the story from Lady Anna Austen at a time of severe depression, and it cheered him up so much that he put it into verse. The poem was published anonymously in the Public Advertiser in 1782, and then published with The Task in 1785.
