Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD, NAP). This was Daniel Bell's book. He contributed an essay titled Ethnicity and Social Change. He did not write his name in the book. He did, curiously, put a parenthetical line beside two paragraphs in his own essay. He did this again only a few times, once on page 306 and 312, and twice on page 313. On the rear flap he wrote '1 +2-- Modernity', and referenced page 306 with the words 'Orlando structured' and page 313 with a word I can't make out. Orlando Patterson was the author of the essay, titled Context and Choice in Ethnic Allegiance, in which these pages appeared. Glazer and Bell went to college together and taught together. Here's a quote from Glazer's Wikipedia profile: 'When Glazer attended the City College of New York in the 1940s, it was known as a hotbed of radicalism. Glazer fell in with a number of other young Marxists who were hostile to Soviet-style communism. Glazer, Irving Howe, Daniel Bell, and Irving Kristol would meet in an alcove of the City College cafeteria, and they spent their days trying to understand how the socialist ideal of political and economic justice had ended in Joseph Stalin's murderous tyranny. As Glazer would later recall, 'one of the characteristics of our group was a notion of its universal competence. Culture, politics, whatever was happening we shot our mouths off on. It was a model created by the arrogance that if you're a Marxist you can understand anything and it was a model that even as we gave up our Marxism we nevertheless stuck with.' Dr. Bell took very good care of the book. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The spine looks very good, just a little crinkling at the top edge. The page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm not finding any soiling. I'm not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And Dr. Bell's handful of penned margin lines represent the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. I've always had the dust jacket in a fitted protective cover. It looks very clean. I'm not noticing any tears. There's a very small loss at the top rear corner. There is a thin crease coming down from the rear top edge. The flaps are in very good shape, very clean, a couple of tiny crinkles. I've already noted the penned notes on the rear flap which also include '1975.' From the dust jacket: 'This volume launches a far-reaching exploration into the meaning, manifestations, and significance of ethnicity in modern society and politics. The authors seek neither to celebrate nor to deplore ethnicity, but rather to examine it as a basis of social organization which in modern societies has achieved a significance comparable to that of social class. Ethnicity indicates that minority groups around the world are no longer doing what society for hundreds of years has expected them to do-- assimilate, disappear, or endure as exotic, troublesome survivors. Instead, their numbers have expanded by immigration, their experiences and struggles mirrored to one another by the international mass media, minorities have become vital, highly conscious forces within almost all contemporary societies. Ethnicity has played a pivotal role in recent social change; it has evolved into a political idea, a mobilizing principle, and an effective means of advancing group interests.'.…

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. 18th Printing. The hypothesis of this book is that there has been a change in the character of the American people, that where once men whose character was "inner-directed" dominated our society, the tendency is now toward the dominance of the "other-directed" character. The inner-directed persons are those who internalize adult authority - the pioneers, the individualist; the other-directed persons are those whose character is formed chiefly by the example of their peers and contemporaries. The substance of the book is concerned with the confluence and consequences of these two types in contemporary American society. ----------------- The cover is poor but the contents are complete, clean and bright. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD, NAP). The Lonely Crowd, 'a landmark study of American character', is considered by many to be the most influential book of the twentieth century. This is the genuine First Edition with '1950' on both the title page and the copyright page. 'In 1950, Yale University Press printed 3,000 copies of The Lonely Crowd, only to have to order thirteen additional printings before the book appeared in an abridged version as one of the first 'quality paperbacks' in the Anchor Books series, where it became an even greater success. I've rated this book Very Good. You can see the covers in the photographs. They are very clean. There are a few little white spots on the spine. The edges are in very good shape, just a a few tiny areas of fading of the green on the front bottom edge. All four corners have small, smooth spots of rubbing. There is also a little rubbing and crinkling at the spine ends, the top one seems like it has one teeny tiny tear. The page edges look very good. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I didn't see any soiling. That's also the case for the white inside covers and end papers. I'm also not finding any creasing. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The dust jacket is in decent condition. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book which goes back a good number of years. It is pretty clean. There are a couple spots of soiling on the rear cover. As you can see there are fairly small losses, one at the front bottom corner, one at the top edge of the spine and one at the bottom edge of the spine. There's also a small scuff at the front top corner. The flaps are in decent shape. There is a small, thin tear of the top edge of the front flap, not reaching the print. The front bottom corner is clipped. That's where the price was on this jacket. The sociologist Irving Louis Horowitz wrote that The Lonely Crowd was the most influential and widely read mid-century work of social and cultural criticism. It catapulted Riesman onto the cover of Time magazine in 1954, the first social scientist so honored. 'Writing in the post-World War II period, Riesman sought to understand what kinds of character structures were being encouraged by the social institutions of modern society, including capitalist corporations, political institutions, and the mass media. He proposed three different character types. The tradition-directed type was the product of unchanging societies in which social patterns were rooted in the past. The traditional character was rigid, insular, and not open to innovation. The development of industrial society, however, required a new character type. The 19th century saw the rise of what Riesman called the inner-directed type. This character received its essential structure in its youth, through strong family and community socialization. Unlike the traditional type, the inner-directed person could change and develop, but only following the direction of his or her inner gyroscope, whose essential pattern had been determined in youth. Riesman argued that in the mid-20th century the inner-directed type was being replaced by a new character type. Modern organizations demanded people who took their cues from what other people expected of them. These other-directed individuals used their social radar, rather than an inner gyroscope, to guide their values and actions. They preferred to be loved rather than esteemed. Their character was not shaped primarily by family or religion, but rather was strongly influenced by peer culture and the mass media.' Professor Riesman urged Americans to find 'the nerve to be oneself when that self is not approved of by the dominant ethic of a society.'.…
