Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 48+[1 ad] pages with frontispiece portraits, diagrams and tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2")bound in quarter blue cloth over stiff boards. First edition. In 1929, a World Chess Championship was played between challenger Efim Bogoljubow and titleholder Alexander Alekhine. The match was held in Wiesbaden, Heidelberg and Berlin in Germany, and the Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, from September 6 to November 12. Alekhine retained his title. Alekhine had been world champion since his 1927 victory over José Raúl Capablanca. In 1928, Bogoljubov won a major tournament at Bad Kissingen, ahead of Capablanca and most other leading players of the day except for Alekhine. Following this win, he challenged Alekhine for the world title. There was also an alternative offer of a return match against Capablanca in Bradley Beach, New Jersey, U.S. Under the rules at the time, the champion chose the challenger, and Alekhine chose to play a match against Bogoljubov. FINAL SCORE: Alekhine 11; Bogoljubov 5 (9 draws) Condition: Some soiling, corners bumped, lightly soiled else very good.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 45+[2 ad] pages with two portrait plates and diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in quarter blue cloth over stiff brown boards. Signed by Grandmaster Efim Bogoljubow. From the library of Lothar Schmid. (Linde-N. 5081; cf. Betts 27-31) Second edition revised. The match began in Buenos Aires on September 9, 1927. Conditions followed the London Rules: games to be played at 2½ hours per 40 moves, with the match awarded to the first to win 6 games, draws not counting. Capablanca would receive $2,000 of the purse as a fee, with the remainder split $4,800 to the victor and $3,200 to the loser.[18] The Argentine Chess Club provided the venue, except for two games played in the Jockey Club. Dr. Carlos A. Querencio served as referee, and Daniel Deletang was Alekhine's second. Alekhine won the first game on the black side of a French Defence. Every subsequent game would be contested with a Queen's pawn opening. After ten games Capablanca led 2-1, but he dropped two in a row and a long series of draws followed. According to Garry Kasparov, Capablanca let slip "an enormous positional advantage" in Game 17. After Alekhine notched his fourth win in Game 21, Capablanca opined that "there can hardly be a stronger player in the world than the Slav master." Capablanca did well to save the draw in Game 22, and Kasparov maintains that the Cuban now played the match with increasing power until he missed the win in the "completely won" 27th game. After winning Game 29, Capablanca trailed the match by just a point, and optimistically remarked that "the match takes on fresh interest." Kasparov believes that Capablanca missed a win in Game 31, and then, later in the game, settled for a draw when he was a pawn up, and could well have played on. A win would have tied the match. Alekhine characterized his win in Game 32 as "well-contested" and "full of ideas" from both players. Now Alekhine needed just one more win to take the title. With adjournments, the 34th and final game took four days to complete, ending on November 29 when Capablanca did not show up to resume play. Instead, he sent a congratulatory resignation note. Efim Bogoljubow (1889-1952) was a legendary Ukrainian-German chess Grandmaster best known for his fierce competitive longevity, his legendary self-confidence, and his famous quip: "When I am White, I win because I am White. When I am Black, I win because I am Bogoljubow." He twice challenged his fierce rival Alexander Alekhine for the World Chess Championship, playing high-stakes matches in 1929 and 1934. He won consecutive Soviet Championships in 1924 and 1925 before migrating to Germany, where he won the first official German Championship in 1933. His greatest tournament victory came at Moscow 1925, where he finished ahead of world champions Emanuel Lasker and José Raúl Capablanca. Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid (10 May 1928 - 18 May 2013) was a German chess grandmaster. He was born in Radebeul near Dresden into a family who were the co-owners of the Karl May Press, which published the German Karl May adventure novels. He was best known as the chief arbiter at several World Chess Championship matches, in particular the 1972 encounter between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky at Reykjavic. He was also an avid collector of chess books and paraphernalia. It was reputed that he owned the largest known private chess library in the world, as well as a renowned collection of chess art, chess boards and chess pieces from around the globe. Condition: Signature of the Russian-German Grandmaster Efim Bogoljubow to title. Lothar Schmid's bookplate to title verso. Interior slightly toned; corners bumped. Binding shows minor signs of wear else very good. Signed by Author(s).…
