Añadir al carritoEnnea nigeriensis sp. n. is described from southeastern Nigeria on the basis of external and internal shell morphology. Following Pilsbry's formal criteria of a single palatal fold and corresponding external furrow, the new species may be assigned to Parennea. Ennea nigeriensis sp. n. exhibits substantial similarity with E. serr…ata, a species from Cameroon, in the cylindrical shell shape, crenulate suture, and internal shell morphology, indicating that the two species are closely related. CT scanning confirmed the presence of only a single palatal fold in E. nigeriensis sp. n. and two in E. serrata. In spite of this, the Nigerian species is provisionally assigned to Ennea rather than Parennea, suggesting that the characters used to define Ennea and Parennea are insufficient to delimit natural groups of species. The holotype of E. serrata is examined for the first time since its description in 1896 and a redescription of the species is provided based on the two shells hitherto known. Study of the original specimens recorded as Ptychotrema (Parennea) sulciferum by Degner from Liberia reveals these to belong to Ennea cf. thompsonae. The Nigerian shell recorded by van Bruggen as Ptychotrema (Parennea) aequatoriale proved to be a specimen of Ennea cf. perforata. As a result, no species attributable to Parennea now appear to be known in West Africa; in contrast, numerous species are known from central and eastern Africa. New taxon: Ennea nigeriensis n. sp. pp. 21-34, 5 figs, gr. 8.

Añadir al carritoA new, minute species of Streptaxidae from southwest Cameroon, Gulella kuiperi spec. nov., is described. The systematic position of this apparently rare species is discussed. Since information of the soft parts is lacking, as is the case for the vast majority of the numerous species of Gulella s.l. described to date, its generic… position remains unclear. On the basis of some conchological characters, the species is provisionally assigned to the subgenus Silvigulella. 4 pp., 3 figs, gr. 8.

Añadir al carritoIn August-September 2003 a thriving population of the originally southern European land snail Xerotricha apicina (Lamarck, 1822) was discovered for the first time in the Netherlands in a coastal dune area near IJmuiden (prov. Noord-Holland). This probably represents the as yet northernmost record in Europe. In 2003 the populatio…n, with animals ranging from tiny juveniles to adults, occupied an area of approx. 70 x 70 m with densities up to 500 (sub)adult animals m-2. In April 2005 the species seemed to have expanded its range by some 50 m. All fresh shells collected are distinctly pilose, whereas most descriptions in the literature emphasize that adult shells are usually hairless, in contrast to juveniles. The species' habitat at IJmuiden is similar to that described in the literature. Since the species possesses a bi-annual life cycle, it must have arrived in 2002 at the very latest, probably some years earlier. The population thus survived the relatively cold winter of 2002-2003 with minimum temperatures of -13 [degree]C close to the site. This, and the availability of suitable habitat nearby, suggests that the species may be able to establish itself firmly in the Netherlands. 6 pp., 9 figs, gr. 8.

Añadir al carritoSystematic sampling of a single square km patch of rather acidic, undisturbed, fairly uniform Cameroonian rainforest during two different rainy seasons yielded 97 species of land snails, belonging to at least 12 families. Up to 45 species were collected within a single sampling site of 20 m X 20 m during a single visit, and up t…o 51 during two visits in different seasons. This might be the world's highest sympatric land snail diversity reported to date. Variation in species composition among the sampling sites appeared to be largely random, and not due to geographic or ecological replacement. Three (super)families make up 86% of the species, the carnivorous Streptaxidae (34%) being the most diverse. Overall snail abundance was rather low, and many species were rare. Of 64% of the species, the abundance was less than 1% of all specimens (2,654) collected. A substantial difference was observed in overall snail abundance between the two sampling periods. About 27% of the species were uniquely found in one of the two sampling periods, and many species differed more than 50% in relative abundance between these seasons. At least 27% of the species were largely or completely arboreal, and 19% were found to live both on the ground and in the vegetation; 46% of the species appear to be confined to the ground, and of 7% insufficient information was available. Major adult shell dimensions (height or diameter) range between approximately 1 and 165 mm, but the vast majority (74%) of species had adult shells smaller than 10 mm. The shell height:diameter ratio distribution is bimodal, but differs from those previously reported for other faunas by relatively many "globose" (H/D 0.8-1.2) and very tall (H/D 2.8-4.4) shells. The distribution of neither shell size nor shell shape differed between ground-dwelling and (partly) arboreal species. 20 pp., 5 figs, gr. 8.

Añadir al carrito'Marconia' hamiltoni s.l. is known from two discrete mountainous areas in Malawi, i.e. the (southern) Mt. Mulanje complex, and the (more northern) Zomba Plateau s.l. These uplands are separated by about 65 km of lower lying land with different types of vegetation and climate. Material from these two regions may be distinguished…as separate species, the southern populations having comparatively small and broad shells with some apertural dentition ('M.' hamiltoni, lectotype designated), while the northern populations have noticeably larger and more slender shells with a more reduced apertural dentition ('M.' malavensis). Discussion of the type localities for both taxa shows that these are either localized in an unlikely place ('M.' hamiltoni) or unclear ('M.' malavensis). Radula and genital anatomy of 'M.' hamiltoni are described and depicted for the first time. Both species are ovoviviparous, a rarely reported phenomenon in the Streptaxidae. The genitalia are markedly different from what is known in various streptaxid genera with which these species may be or have been classified. In spite of the confused streptaxid taxonomy, a new genus, Austromarconia, is introduced with Ennea hamiltoni as type species. 20 pp., 21 figs, gr. 8.
