As the axis connecting the established power centers of Paris, London, and New York became increasingly dominated by monolithic trends including Pop, minimalism, and conceptualism another web of ideas was being spun linking the hubs of Warsaw, Budapest, Zagreb, Buenos Aires, Caracas, and Sao Paulo. These artistic practices were dedicated to what appeared to be an entirely different set of aesthetic concerns: philosophies of art and culture dominated by notions of progress and science, the machine and engineering, construction and perception. Composed of industrial junk, often motor-animated, these works perform a theater of dystopian industrial hybrids. Bursztyn's immersive installations are characterized by their disconcerting mechanical sound produced by the frenetic vibration of the sculptures, as well as by occasional music scores accompanying the pieces. Beyond the Horizon dives into two recent exhibitions in Chicago by contemporary artist Jeffrey Gibson: Sweet Bitter Love at the Newberry Library and Beyond the Horizon at Kavi Gupta Gallery. The juxtaposition of objects across geographical, temporal, and cultural boundaries was at the center of Sweet Bitter Love, Gibsons first institutional exhibition in Chicago. Sweet Bitter Love included four distinct groups of objects: two sets of paintings (one by Elbridge Ayer Burbank, who created portraits of Indigenous Americans, and the other by Gibson), accession cards from the Field Museum, and a site-specific wallpaper. Significantly, the exhibition featured six new portraits by Gibson that were commissioned on the occasion of the Toward Common Cause: Art, Social Change, and the MacArthur Fellows Program at 40, a multi-site exhibition in Chicago.
