According to the abstract, it distinguishes three approaches to the problem: experiments on external influences on the germ, hybridisation experiments on sex-limited inheritance, and microscopic study of the germ cells. It builds on Wilson's 1905 demonstration in Protenor belfragei (13 chromosomes in the male, 14 in the female), which linked the X chromosome to sex. Cited early, e.g. by Davenport (1912). An important document in the history of the chromosome theory of sex. His textbook The Cell in Development and Inheritance (1896) became a classic of modern biology.
