Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. This is "The Kenyon Review No. 114" , Vol. XXIX, No. 2 - March 1967. Notable in this issue are three stories by T. F. Powys : "The Kingfisher", "The Wine-Fed Tree", and "The Red Petticoat", being the first American appearance for each of these stories. These stories are illustrated by Arvis Stewart, who also created the cover art. Stewart is generally known as the illustrator for a good many children's books. The issue also has an essay by Angus Wilson in which he tackles "Evil in the English Novel" . Also William Fifield reports on conversations and interactions he had had with Picasso, Cocteau, Rossellini, and the matador El Cordobés. William Mueller and Josephine Jacobson together analyze the state of European Absurdists, focussing on Samuel Beckett ("Waiting for Godot"), Eugène Ionesco, Albert Camus and Jean Genet. This 70 year old book is in good condition for its age, marred only by a slightly bowed front cover, a bump on its back top right corner, some light wear on its covers' corners and bottom edges, and on the base of its spine, two very faint circular rub spots on its front cover, plus light toning with some foxing on edges of its page block (not extending onto page faces.) Its binding is sound and square, with no spine crease. Covers are unmarked and otherwise unworn, with perhaps some slight fading to the gilt titles on its spine. Pages are unmarked and unworn, with some light toning along their top edge. Its dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover, is unmarked and also in good condition for its age: toned along its top edge, back flap fold, and llightly on its white back, but otherwise bright, marred only by tiny chips in the tops of its folds, traces of wear on tis spine ends, and some faint soiling on its lightly toned white back, but otherwise bright, whole, and unworn. I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its new owner in the same condition as my description.…

Both the introduction and foreword corrected in pen by the publisher or probably Haining? Three typed signed letters from Giles Gordon at Victor Gollancz to Peter Haining at The Hideaway, Mill Lane, Birch Green, Nr Colchester, Essex written on headed notepaper from 14 Henrietta Street, London W.C.2. The first letter dated 29th June, 1970 and consisting of about 115 words passes on information from Wilson about agreeing to his fee and saying he must read the stories first and that as he is 'frantically busy' he couldn't have it ready before September. Several notes on the letter in Haining's hand. The second letter addressed as above dated 21st September, 1970 consisting of about 92 words encloses a carbon of the foreword and says Wilson has asked for Haining to tone down the 'fulsome' remarks about him in the preface. The final letter addressed as above dated 30th September, 1970 and consisting of about 215 words in which Giles Gordon discusses a few changes and the dust jacket illustration and says it has now gone to the printers. He says he thinks it is impressive and is as good as 'The Wild Night Company' (Haining's book on Irish Terror Tales). He says he has cut down some of the 'estatic praise for the individual contributors as I think your enthusiasm rather ran away with you.' Peter Haining (1940-2007) was a prolific writer and editor on subjects ranging from crime and horror to witchcraft and fantasy. He became Editorial Director of the New English Library publishing house.
