There are no first editions for sale on the Internet. There is one second edition, but it is an ex-library copy (selling at $100.00), and there is one other third edition. My copy is in very good condition. You can see the original maroon covers in the photos. They are pretty clean and have only a bit of wear. The color of the spine is somewhat faded. The gilt lettering there is no doubt less bright than in 1908, but still quite legible. One bottom corner has a mere speck of rub-through. The spine ends have only a little crinkling. There's a small area of puffing on the rear cover. The edges are in good shape. The covers are very solidly bound. The pages are, for the most part, solidly bound. One illustration is cleanly detached. And there is one instance a few pages before that where there is a thin crack or space between two facing pages. It is actually only over the bottom half of the gutter and neither of the two pages is loose. There's also a small gathering of pages just before that where the bottom 1/2 inch of the pages (before reaching the first binding) can be lifted up a little bit. That's not going to lead to any problem. I'm not finding any other binding issues, and the book has a very solid feel in one's hands, but sometimes when there's one or two small issues it can indicate that others could develop later on. It really doesn't feel that way here, but I want to err on the side of caution in my description. The interior of the book is in really nice condition. The inside covers and end papers are a very attractive flowered pattern in white and brown. They are all perfectly clean and show no wear at all. The pages are also very clean. I'm not finding any conspicuous instances of soiling, maybe a speck or two here or there, if even that. I'm also not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder corner creases, no dogeared corners, very nice-looking pages. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. A rare book in very presentable condition. 'Samuel Wendell Williston was an American educator and paleontologist who was the first to propose that birds developed flight cursorially (by running), rather than arboreally (by leaping from tree to tree). He was also an entomologist, specializing in diptera. He is remembered for Williston's law, which states that parts in an organism, such as arthropod limbs, become reduced in number and specialized in function through evolutionary history. Although never employed as a professional entomologist, Williston was a well-renowned specialist on the taxonomy and systematics of flies (Diptera). He became the first North American specialist on this group, publishing over 50 books and papers, and naming more than 1250 species. His best-known works were the three editions of the Manual of North American Diptera (1888, 1896, and 1908).
