Plain white endpapers. [4] pp preceding pagination (including b&w photo frontispiece, then: [iii], iv-vii, [viii], then pp [1-2] are skipped by the publisher, picking up at [3], 4-296. Many b&w full page photos, which are included in pagination. Contents, list of illus, James' preface; Xvi chapters; treasurer's report; a 'Pathetic Poem' - found in the knapsack of a dead Union prisoner at Andersonville. Condition notes: A very good collectible if worn early printing, inscribed by primary author ("Compliments of D.G James") on front free endpaper, and with ownership signature of a Wisconsin veteran of the war. Moderate wear to boards, with rubbing and staining; spine ends rolled, corners bumped. Dark stain the size of a thumbtack head to spine; text block edges lightly soiled. Modest lean to spine. Interior lightly tanned. Binding weakening/fabric showing recto frontispiece and again at 294. Ownership signature John Siggelko to ffep, likely the Union Civil War veteran of Dane County, Wisconsin, 1841-1933. From James' preface: ".I alone assumed the work of compiling this volume of horrors. You will ask me why I put this off until nearly half a century after the crime. It was so revolting the survivors desired to forget it." And so on. We personally inspect every book we offer.
