From the Gladstone Library at Fasque, with bookplate. ESTC T142029. Melmoth's fictionalized letters, first published under a pseudonym in 1748, were highly successful, and include a number addressed to his wife 'Cleora'. Born in 1710, Melmoth occupied himself mainly with classical translation, and became one of the most prolific and successful practitioners of his day.

Covers with some rubbing, slight worming to first and last few pages near lower gutter (not affecting text) slight edge wear and repair to folding map and one plate, otherwise very good. Brown full leather boards, 6 bands to spine, blind stamp decorations to compartments and titles on red leather label, cream epps, frontispiece engraving of author Francis Salignac, 327pp, plus Index and 'direction to book binders' to rear, all engravings and map are present in this volume. Front epp repaired at the hinge and 1/2 of top of ffep missing, some light foxing throughout otherwise a very good copy of this scarce ed with new engravings. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

First edition?. iv, [1], 14-448pp [i.e.248pp]. With an engraved frontispiece referencing the story of 'Maria: An affecting Narrative', contained within the text of the volume. Contemporary sheep, rubbed and worn, with splitting to joints, loss to spine and extremities, boards holding by binding cords. Paper flaw to H5 without loss of sense. Contemporary ink inscription dated June 27th 1781 to FFEP. A rare compilation of short works of fiction, and otherwise, in prose and verse, arranged by the semi-reclusive English author and translator William Henry Melmoth (bap. 1710, d. 1799). Notable inclusions are 'The Ghost, the 'Remarkable Life of a Strolling Player, written by himself' and 'New and genuine Anecdotes of Dean Swift', amongst a wealth of other pieces apparently sourced from contemporary literary periodicals. ESTC has two records of what appear to be duodecimo editions of the same work, albeit one with a cancel title (entitled The Modern universal story-teller. and likely a reissue of the sheets of this work). Both are rare, with this edition only held at Cambridge, Oxford and Pennsylvania. The dating of this volume, conjectured from the dates of Alexander Hogg's Pasternoster Row presence at 14 and 16 Paternoster Row, is relatively well substantiated by the inscription in this volume, and the advertisement, to the verso of the title of this volume, of The New Art of Speaking, which has also been tentatively conjectured to 1780.
