Abert's examination of New Mexico in 1846-47; Philip St. George Cooke's march from Santa Fe to San Diego; and the journal of Captain Abraham R. Johnston. A foundational geographical, military, ethnographic, botanical, and visual record of the American Southwest during the Mexican-American War and a recognized Zamorano Eighty high spot. While large sections are still labeled "unexplored territory," Emory fitted these fragments together with the information gathered during his surveys into a reasonably correct cartographic picture of the West.
