Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a significant chapter of American history, offering a firsthand account of the tumultuous process of surveying and establishing the boundary between the United States and Mexico following the Mexican-American War and the subsequent Gadsden Purchase. The author, a key figure in this undertaking, navigates the complexities of diplomacy, logistics, and the challenges of traversing uncharted and often hostile terrain. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly changing nation, grappling with the implications of westward expansion, the discovery of gold in California, and ongoing tensions with indigenous populations. The author's personal account sheds light on the intricate political landscape of the time, exposing bureaucratic inefficiencies, funding challenges, and interpersonal conflicts that threatened the project's success. Amidst these obstacles, the book underscores the unwavering dedication of the survey team and their commitment to scientific accuracy and diplomatic integrity. Through vivid descriptions and meticulous detail, the author illuminates the geographical diversity, cultural encounters, and the sheer scale of the endeavor. The reader gains a profound understanding of the challenges and triumphs associated with defining national borders, and the lasting impact of this process on the shaping of the American Southwest. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling testament to human resilience, scientific exploration, and the enduring quest for order amidst the uncertainties of a nation in flux. Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. This rare first Senate edition of Notes of a Military Reconnaissance by Lt. Col. William Hemsley Emory documents one of the most critical overland journeys of the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. Emory's detailed observations as a trained topographical engineer and naturalist while accompanying the Army of the West offer significant early scientific data on the geography, wildlife, and Native American tribes of the American Southwest. The route Emory charted would later support the rationale for the Gadsden Purchase while also being a popular travel route during the California Gold Rush. Widely regarded as an essential foundation for any Western Americana collection, it includes 43 engraved plates, including 3 full-page maps of battles from the Mexican-American War. Handwritten signature of [Dr. L. McKraken] on front flyleaf. Octavo (8vo), single volume. Good condition; modern brown cloth binding is tight and sound without wear, while pages and plates show extensive foxing, though the text is legible, and wanting folding map. Collation: 416 pp. Illustrations: 43 engraved plates including 3 full-page maps; wanting folding map. Edition: Washington, Wendell and Van Benthuysen. First edition, 1848. References: Graff 1249; Howes E 145; Sabin 22536; Wagner-Camp 148-5; Zamorano Eighty 33. #31155. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, expanded House of Representatives issue. Thirtieth Congress, First Session, House Executive Document No. 41. Octavo. 614 pages. Illustrated with 64 lithographed or engraved plates, three battle plans, additional illustrations within the text, and two large folding maps: Abert and Peck's Map of the Territory of New Mexico and Cooke's Sketch of Part of the March & Wagon Road from Santa Fe to the Pacific Ocean. The preferred House issue, substantially enlarged from the Senate issue to include William H. Emory's reconnaissance with General Stephen W. Kearny's Army of the West; James W. Abert's examination of New Mexico in 1846-47; Philip St. George Cooke's march from Santa Fe to San Diego; and the journal of Captain Abraham R. Johnston. A foundational geographical, military, ethnographic, botanical, and visual record of the American Southwest during the Mexican-American War and a recognized Zamorano Eighty high spot. This copy is preserved in an unusual custom burgundy leather and apparently rattlesnake-skin binding, ruled and lettered in gilt, with "Early Survey of New Mexico and California" lettered on the spine. The front blank bears a presentation inscription to Thomas L. Wiles, describing him as "one of God's noblemen and my friend," followed by a distinctive but presently unidentified signature. CONDITION NOTES: Scattered foxing and toning throughout, heavier on the preliminary leaves and certain plates. The folding maps exhibit creasing, localized staining, fold wear, and several small tears or separations. Contemporary half calf, smooth spine gilt with author and title, red edges, stamp on title. Hinge cracked, small loose and label on spine. Large folding map detached and showing browning along the folds. First edition, Senate issue. 30th Congress, 1st Session, Senate, Executive No. 7. Emory of the Corps of Topographical Engineers. The text is divided into two distinct parts : a narrative of the journey itself, combining geographical, logistical, and military observations, followed by extensive appendices presenting the scientific results of the expedition, including meteorological and astronomical observations, geological notes, and natural history data. The plates provide early visual documentation of California, Native American populations, scientific observations, and contemporary military operations. Compiled from original field observations, it provides the first comprehensive official mapping of the regions traversed by the expedition, integrating military routes, topography, settlements, barometric profiles, and tables of distances and elevations. The present example corresponds to the second and finalized state. Demi veau époque, dos lisse avec auteur et titre, tranches rouges, cachet au titre, charnière fendues, carte détachée et présentant des brunissures aux plis. (Howes E146; Wagner-Camp 291; Wheat, Transmississippi West III, 822 and pages 242-4.) First edition with this set includes three plates not recorded in Wagner-Camp and not found in all copies: a colorful "Map Illustrating the General Geological Features of the Country West of the Mississippi River" (facing page I:258); "View of Monument Mountain" facing page I:96; and "View Along the Gila (Cereus Giganteus)" facing the last text leaf in the second volume. The folding map in volume one is one of the foundation maps for the western United States and represents the culmination of fifty years of government explorations. Starting with Lewis and Clark, there were numerous official and unofficial surveys and explorations, all adding to the pool of knowledge presented here. While large sections are still labeled "unexplored territory," Emory fitted these fragments together with the information gathered during his surveys into a reasonably correct cartographic picture of the West. This map shows large, transitional territories of Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon, Washington and Minnesota. It was drawn by Thomas Jekyll under the supervision of Lt. Nathaniel Michler of the Topographical Engineers. Lt. Michler worked with his counterpart representing Mexico, Captain Francisco Jimenez, to survey between Nogales and Yuma including the area south of Arivaca. Condition: Modern cloth; intermittent offsetting and minor foxing, a few paper clip marks, one extraneous leaf bound in to second volume, a few leaves worn with tape repairs else very good.
