To most telephone users, "the telephone company" is one great business organism that operates from coast to coast. But geographically speaking, as will appear from the map reproduced on the end papers of this book, two-thirds of the nation is the domain of the independents, ranging in size from a rural exchange with a single operator to substantial enterprises which serve a chain of important communities.
