Collates complete with 265, [2] pages. Hardcover: H 27.5cm x L 20cm. Semi-rigid black covers lightly rubbed; mild scuffing at spine ends and at tips of board corners; front board's gilt stamping remains bright. Foxing and soiling to edges. Marbled-pattern endpapers; ink signature "Emy Louise Price" at top of front free endpaper…(with student Emy Lou Price on page 52's Sophomore Class Roll and page 106's yearbook Editorial Staff); frequent light toning at page margins throughout; occasional light soiling and foxing to interior pages too; first several leaves with short tears at their lower fore-edge margins. Text block sags significantly at center but lessens towards yearbook's front and rear as the quires are pulling away from the spine's inner cloth backstrip which is often the case with college annuals of this era due to the heavy stock paper overly burdening the minimal stitching at the inner endbands; although the printer/binder reinforced the front and rear hinges, the binding is shaken between pages 128-129 and 144-145 and has multiple lesser stress points causing various quires (mostly at front and rear) to be pulled. Still a fair copy with much better exterior cosmetics than what is usually encountered. B/w photographs and illustrations throughout with a concluding 19 page advertising section. Of all the William Faulkner-related Ole Miss yearbooks the 1920 annual is the most significant as Faulkner contributed five b/w illustrations (reproduced from original pen-and-ink drawings), an original poem, and appears in two photographs all as follows: {#1} page 29 - unsigned illustration (but in Faulkner's unmistakable style) of four men as headpiece for Classes Section; {#2} page 105 - signed illustration of wind-blown man and woman as headpiece for Organizations Section; {#3} page 107 - Faulkner at bottom right corner of Ole Miss Staff photo; {#4} page 145 - "Members of A.E.F. Club" page has small signed illustration of a women and man, the latter in a military uniform, captioned with a joke in French; {#5} page 146 - Faulkner at left side of American Legion group photo; {#6} page 155 - signed illustration of a dancing man and woman beside a bowing guitarist in foreground with candelabras in background all as a headpiece for Social Activities Section; {#7} page 157 - small signed illustration of dancing man and woman for Red and Blue Club page; and {#8} page 174 - signed two-stanza, fourteen-line poem titled "To a Co-ed" (expressing influences drawn from Algernon Swinburne, A.E. Housman, John Keats, and the Elizabethans). The first Ole Miss yearbook was issued for the 1896-1897 academic year nearly a half-century after the school's founding in 1848. Please note that this book has an approximate shipping weight of 3 pounds (1.36 kg) and will require additional postage and insurance above AbeBooks' preset rate.
