Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. This is "Mary McCarthy" by Willene Schaefer Hardy, a critical assessment of one of the 20th Centuries leading authors and intellectual Lights. Published by Frederick Ungar in 1981, Hardcover Format. THIS IS AN X-LIBRARY BOOK IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. From the jacket write-up : "A personal life of great range and many interests has set Mary McCarthy apart since the childhood she recalls so vividly in her unique autobiography "Memories of a Catholic Girlhood". Her sense of her own superiority was not, as the writer acknowledges, always justified. But, as the book shows, there is something of that child in each of McCarthy's fictional heroines. She is well known for candid uses of herself and her acquaintances in her novels and short stories. We also see the moral view of life that gives direction to her funny, sometimes painful, always truthful analyses of the minds and conduct of mid-twentieth century intellectuals. In this introduction to Mary McCarthy, each of her novels is considered in detail, including 'The Group', the sensational best seller that brought the fame and fortune and the stern disapproval of many of her one time admirers; 'The Groves of Academe', the academic novel that is acknowledged as one of the best of the genre; and 'Cannibals and Missionaries', examined at length. There is also a discussion of selected nonfiction, focusing on 'Venice Observed', The Vietnam essays, and the Watergate portraits. We see that in essay and story alike, McCarthy cuts through the pretense and self-deception to expose the less than honorable motives that frequently underlie and sometimes undermine the best actions" X LIBRARY CONTENTS : ** Biography ** "Memories of a Catholic Girlhood" : the Author's Early Years ** "Preserve me in disunity" : the Quest for Identity in "The Company She Keeps" ** The Demands of the Ethical and the Quest for Superiority in "A Charmed Life" ** A Brave New Generation : "The Group" ** A Scholarly Maze and a Question of Justice : "The Groves of Academe" ** The Liberal Imagination and the Modern Dilemma : "Birds of America" ** The Author in Her Own Voice : Essays on Diverse Subjects ** The Sons of Adam in and out of Eden : "The Oasis" and "Cannibals and Missionaries" SERIES : Modern Literature Series TITLE : Mary McCarthy AUTHOR : Willene Schaefer Hardy IMPRINT : Frederick Ungar Publications PLACE : New York DATE : (1981) EDITION : First Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP - Ungar is no longer in business.
