Juni 1666 war der Tag, an dem Herzog Franz Erdmann von Sachsen, Engern und Westfalen auf seinem Schlosse Neuhaus den »Burger Meistern vnd Ra…ht Männern Unserer Stadt Lauwenburg« das Privilegium der »Schießen-Freyheit« gewährte und zugleich die »Articul Vndt Ordnung der Schützen-Brüder zu Lauwenburg« erließ. Von diesem Tage an datiert die mehr oder weniger genau zu verfolgende Geschichte der »Lauenburger Schützengilde von 1666 e.V. Allerdings wurde zu dieser Zeit nicht viel aufgeschrieben, so dass nur einige Bemerkungen im Zusammenhang mit anderen Ereignissen darauf verweisen, dass es in Lauenburg eine »Goien-Gilde« und »Goien-Schützen« gab. Sie hatten ihren Namen daher, dass sie in frühester Zeit mit Pfeil und Bogen, später mit Armbrüsten nach einem auf Holz gemalten bunten Vogel schossen, nach einem Papagei, dem »Goien«, wie der Volksmund sagte. Dieses Schießen war allerdings kein Sport oder ein Vergnügen, sondern es galt dem Nachweis und der Erhaltung der Schießfertigkeit der Bürger, was man heute als eine Art »Reserveübung« ansehen muss.
