He led his army from Spain over the Alps into Italy, bypassing Roman and allied land garrisons, and Roman naval dominance. The exact route of Hannibal's march through the mountains has been much debated by historians. This volume outlines the opinions of Livy, Polybius, and a host of later historians and writers (D'Anville, Gibbon, General Melville, De Luc, etc.); the authors suggest that Hannibal's route to Turin was via the Little St. Bernard Pass. Chapters herein discuss the early historical exploration of the Alps, and describe Hannibal's march through Spain, Gaul, across Mont du Chat, ascent to the summit of the Alps, passage through the Little St. Bernard, descent, the siege and capture of Turin, and more. The covers are like new, as is the backstrip, with bright, bold lettering. Joints and hinges fully complete, binding firm. Recent endpapers. The text pages are untrimmed and are fresh, clean, crisp and bright, as is the folding map. No foxing or stains. The lithographed plates are also clean, but mild offsetting is present on the opposing text pages. No evidence of previous ownership.
