8vo. 116 pp. With oblong folio. 19.25 x 16 in. colour pictorial map frontisp., detailed sections of island and exhibits in blue on verso (fold creases), numerous photo illustrations, text maps, diagrams, stepped thumb tabs at outer fore-edge. Blue-cloth backed softcovers, featuring the striking Art Deco cover art by Simon "Si" Vanderlaan (1904-1986) famed pin-up artist and illustrator, who worked for Walt Disney studios during World War II (minor scuffing, very minor age toning, shelfwear), still VG bright copy, from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. Revised 1939 edition of this excellent guide to the first year in 1939 of the Golden Gate International Exposition, including "Cartograph" revealing all of the Art Deco architectural wonders, and surrounding areas of Treasure Island. The pictorial maps were issued separately, as well as with the "Official Guide Books." Ruth Taylor White's (1902-1985) delightful pictographic maps, or cartographs, included depictions of the Territory of Hawaii in which she had driven, or traveled to every corner of the Islands, and the Grand Canyon for her for her brother's book, "Grand Canyon Country." Later Little Brown requested an entire atlas which was published as the very scarce Our U.S.A., "A gay geography." Her cartographs influenced the style of American cartographic illustration for decades afterwards. Paperback. Condición: Near Fine. An uncommon promotional travel guide for the then US Territory of Hawaii, which includes four "cartograph" maps, and illustrations by the famous pictorial cartographer, Ruth Taylor White. Saddle stapled wraps, 4to size (12 inches tall), pp. 31, [32], illustrated throughout, foot of terminal leaf w. "Printed in Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. by Honolulu Star Bulletin, Ltd." Volume covers are somewhat faded and toned w. minor creasing and a modest bump to foot of spine, the interior illustrations, text, and the four cartoon maps (Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai) by White, all maintain color that still "pops", and are in fine, unmarked condition. Hawaii had a federal census every ten years after 1930, so this travel guide, which references the 1930 census, can be no later than 1939, but likely dates earlier. In 1930, White spent five weeks in Hawaii working on a commission for the Hawaii Tourist Bureau, likely when she created these maps, or very shortly thereafter. Ref. Picturing America : The Golden Age of Pictorial Maps (2017) by Stephen Hornsby. Ruth Taylor White (ilustrador).…

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First edition. Second edition, August 1929 (18 months after first publication). Inscribed on the half-title page in blue ink: "For Sir Byron Bailey, a great eastern Westerner, with admiration, appreciation, and warm regards, Horace Albright." Uncommon signed. With a word of introduction by Stephen Mather, the then-Director of the National Park Service. Albright would go on to assume that position, and he wrote this book as the first superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. A playful account via essays of the history and personas of the National Park Service from its early days. Frank J. Taylor was a freelance magazine writer with a Stanford connection who probably helped Albright touch up his manuscript. See photos for table of contents. Green cloth, maroon topstain, map endpapers, cartoon illustrations and photographs throughout. A very good plus copy with light sunning to spine and some soiling to rear board at bottom; a touch of spotting to faces to outer and lower text block faces, but all and all in great shape. With the uncommon dust jacket, quite elegant and fun, by illustrator Ruth White Taylor; the jacket is in very good plus condition with just a little wear to corners and spine ends. Pictorial map [29.5 cm x 21 cm] printed in vibrant full color. Near fine. From the book 'Our USA-A Gay Geography' with text by Frank J. Taylor. Charming pictorial map that locates some of the distinctive and scenic places in Utah and the cultures and people who inhabit this excellent place. "This was the country the Mormons settled, the country which, as Brigham Young with some reason hoped, no one else wanted. Its destiny was plain on its face, its contempt of man and his history and his theological immortality, his Millennium, his Heaven on Earth, was monumentally obvious. Its distances were terrifying, its cloudbursts catastrophic, its beauty flamboyant and bizarre and allied with death." - Wallace Stegner. "Because the lofty Wasatch Range rises sheer above northern Utah, forming the southern spur of the Rockies, Utah is classed as one of the Rocky Mountain states. However, western Utah is a part of the Great Basin and the southern part of the State verges off into the Southwestern Desert region. Utah is a State of infinite variety, famous for its rainbow-colored canyons, cliffs and natural bridges, and Great Salt Lake. It is renowned likewise as the Mormon State. It was founded, and for a time governed by the Mormon Church." - Frank J. Taylor.…
