Añadir al carritoFull Cloth. Condición: Near Fine. Lovely full stamped black and gilt brown cloth, light wear, slightly age toned, titled on the cover "household edition". [1856]. Pages slightly age toned. Previous owner's name on the title page. Overall in EXCELLENT condition. Frances Miriam "Berry" Whitcher (1811 - 1852) was an American humori…st, born in Whitestown, New York. Whitcher may have been the first significant woman prose humorist in the United States. Frances was born in upstate New York. She lived a fairly sheltered life, and was very close to her family. She was often ill, but managed to find the ridiculous in everyday life. At the age of 35, she married Rev. Benjamin W. Whitcher of Elmira, New York in 1847. She had to put herself more into the public eye as a minister's wife. Whitcher's keen observations of those around her were an unending source of materials for her sketches. Those she wrote about soon saw themselves in her prose, and this caused friction with her husband's parishoners. This may have caused him to lose his position in the church. She contributed poems to the Saturday Gazette and Godey's Lady's Book during the 1840s. Her humorous creation, The Widow Bedott, made her a celebrity. The characters she developed helped her satirize gentility, including issues such as fashion, social status, courtship, and hypocrisy. In 1855, The Widow Bedott Papers, was gathered from her writings and published in book form, featuring her chief character, the comic fool The Widow Bedott. Afterwards, David R. Locke fashioned a coarsely amusing play from it. Consult the memoir by M. L. W. Whitcher in Frances M. Whitcher's Widow Spriggins (New York, 1867). Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Hardcover.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Brown cloth on boards with elaborate blind stamped geometric decorations to front and rear and gilt lettering and botanical decorations, somewhat faded, to spine. Book is mostly tight, square, relatively sharp-cornered and free of major flaws, other than 20…page signature in middle slightly loose, general wear to boards, and minor foxing to first few pages. The first volume of the posthumously published collected satirical sketches of France M. Whitcher (aka Miriam Berry) (1814-1852), whose series "The Widow Bedott's Table-Talk" was originally published under the pen-name "Frank" in the "Saturday Gazette and Lady's Literary Museum" from 1846 to 1850. A second volume of her works, "Widow Spriggins, Mary Elmer, and Other Sketches," was published in 1867 with an introduction by M.L. Ward Whitcher. Whitcher was one of the first female American humorist and this collection contains sharp critiques of the social conventions of the early 19th century.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book represents an incisive and humorous look at mid-19th century American society and culture, specifically concerning the life of the rural widow, Prissilly Bedott, whose observations on love, loss, widowhood, and the struggle for women to interact with society on their own term…s provide a fascinating glimpse into a life rarely recorded in historical literature. The author uses Bedott's wry wit and pointed, often self-deprecating, observations to highlight the difficulties faced by widows who, though primarily dependent on men for social and financial support, often found themselves forced to navigate life's challenges alone. This results in a rich tapestry of tales and insights that reflect not only on the struggles and prejudices of the time but also showcase the tenacity and resilience of women in the face of adversity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
