A lovely anthology edited by Herman Whitaker, a British born writer of short stories, who ended up in the Bay Area befriending many of the luminaries of the art colony there, including Jack London. He contributes a Foreword here, and one of the fifteen short stories. Other contributors include Elizabeth Abbey Everett, short story writer and war poet; Agnes Morley Cleaveland, writer and cattle rancher whose memoir, "No Life for a Lady" (1941) was so popular; Rebecca N. Porter, known for her mystery novel, "The Rest Hollow Mystery" and her book of stories about life on a California ranch, "Aftergow"; and Harriet Holmes Haslett who, apart from having the most alliterative name in the collection, was a playwright also known for her book, "Impulses" (1920). (In fact, ten of the fifteen stories here are by women.) There's also a story by Torrey Connor who went on to edit further volumes in the "West Winds" series. And most recognizable is Jack London's story, "The Son of the Wolf", reprinted from the book of the same name, his first published book in 1900. There are eight illustrations printed in sepia and tipped in by hand, the best known of the artists being Maynard Dixon (illustrating the Jack London story), but also including Perham Nahl, George W. Kegg and Ruth Aikins. There's a story called "Pals" by one Julia B. Foster (about whom I can find little) which is signed by the author at her contribution: "So much good in the worst of us - Julia B. Foster". There were undated subsequent printings in variant bindings, but I believe this copy to be the true first edition. The book is a little browned on the untrimmed edges, and shows minimal wear to spine ends, but it is a near fine copy in a very good, slightly edgeworn dust jacket with chips to spine ends and slightly discolored spine panel.The jacket is complete, but in three pieces, held together with internal paper tape. The front panel, and upper three-quarters of the spine panel, are detached. The front panel shows two small pale red stains. Despite all this, it looks pretty good behind the acetate. Signed by a contributor.
