Half-leather binding; spine leather well scuffed and worn with chipping at ends; small loss to the first "r" in "Harper's" but spine's gilt stamped lettering otherwise remains bright; boards well rubbed with wear and peeling…at edges; leather board corners also worn. Toning and some soiling to edges. Floral decoration to endpapers. Small white rectangular bindery ticket at front pastedown's bottom right corner: "J.E. Hoag, | --Book-Binder-- | Springport, Michigan." for John Ellsworth Hoag who founded bindery business in 1893 and which later operated as Hoag and Son's, Inc. Some occasional light soiling to interior pages with a few margins chips and tears; light moisture stains at fore-edge margins of title page and Index (i.e. pages i-iv). Each issue bound without its front and rear cover. Some color illustrations mostly as frontispieces; numerous b/w illustrations throughout. Successive pagination for each issue: June 1892 VOL. CV, NO. DCXXV on pages 1-162; July 1892 VOL. CV, NO. DCXXVI on pages 163-324; August 1892 VOL. CV, NO. DCXXVII on pages 325-494; September 1892 VOL. CV, NO. Quarter bound in publisher's blue/gray cloth with brown paper and gilt lettering on the spine and front board. Boards have chipping along the rear tail edge and tail fore corners…, stains along the publisher's cloth, finger stains and discoloration from shelving wear on the paper boards and edges, and bending wear along the spine head/tail and tail fore corners. Textblock has slight splitting along the gutter between pages 74/75, smudges on the verso of the plate between pages 142-143, discoloration on pages opposite to plates and manuscripts, mild adhesive stains along the gutter on some pages throughout, minor soiling on some pages throughout, and mild age toning along the edges. DL consignment. Shelved in Case 0. This book is number 23 of 50 copies printed in a larger format than the trade edition and signed by the printer D.B. Updike on the publisher's limitation page. These 50 copies were issued with four facsimiles of manuscripts tipped-in and an additional suite of plates in a separate portfolio. As is usual, this copy lacks the portfolio and additional plates. The Book of the Homeless is a 1916 collection of essays, art, poetry, and musical scores. Proceeds of its sales were used to fund civilians displaced by World War I. 1395395.
