Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. ANDERSEN-SCUDDER LETTERS HERSHOLT & WESTERGAARD EDITORS 1949 1ST EDITION DJ. This book is a compilation of the letters of incomparable Danish children s author Hans Christian Andersen and his American editor and publisher, Horace Elisha Scudder. A quote from the flap of the dust jacket explains this book, to wit: Andersen s letters, many written in his best literary style, offer insight into his character, his outlook on life and his numerous eccentricities. He was something of a philosopher and occasionally expounded his impressions of life in the mid-nineteenth century to Scudder. These letters were apparently part of the large collection of Anderseniana, held by Jean Hersholt. I am pleased to be able to offer a very nice copy of: The Andersen-Scudder Letters Hans Christian Andersen s Correspondence with Horace Elisha Scudder, edited by Jean Hersholt and Waldemar Westergaard. The book includes an Introduction by Jean Hersholt and an Essay by Helge Topsoe-Jensen. There are also Notes and Translations by Waldemar Westergaard. This medium-sized hardcover book (7 x 10 ½ inches, 181 pages) was published by the University of California Press at Berkeley and Los Angeles, dated 1949 and a First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. The book is bound in dark blue cloth with a gilt feather pen on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. It is protected by a light blue, printed paper dust jacket. There is a frontispiece of Andersen and a few pages later, a nice early photo of Scudder, the only illustrations in the book. The letters compiled here date from a first letter of Scudder to Andersen in 1862, to some final letters from the editor to those managing the Author s estate in 1876. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket, however, shows some edge wear and light soiling, a bit of darkening and a pattern of water stains along the spine. The latter have not affected the covers or the interior of the book. The blue hard covers are clean and bright, with just a few very small white smudges on the rear board. The covers are unbumped and the gilt bright. Inside, the book is unmarked and unblemished in any way. The interior pages are bright and clean, from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
