He wrote at least 41 novels under the names Michael Hastings, Alroy West and Gabriel Hythe between 1933 and 1980, mostly adventure thrillers. He also wrote numerous short stories for the Evening News and Argosy between 1949 and 1978. He also wrote on Egyptology and eastern literature, and contributed to the Liverpool Weekly Post. He changed his name to Michael Roy Hastings by deed poll in 1939, and married journalist Barbara Board in 1940, which allowed her to accompany him as he was posted to the Middle East with the RAF during the Second World War.
