Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In a novel set against a transforming Berlin, an artist confronts a diagnosis of breast cancer. Going to openings and parties, setting up a studio and breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Noora is living the post-art school life in Berlin when,in 2005, she's diagnosed with breast cancer. Vaguely restless, until now she's been neither happy nor unhappy, but her entry into what she calls "Cancerland" forces her to question the assumptions by which she lived her life so far.Uneasily, she realizes that the "relationships of the soul" she and her friends value over everythingelsemight not be as indelible as family, after all. In this sharp and picaresque first novel, conceptual artist Annette Weisser depicts the transformation of Berlin from the frontier city of the cold war to an international art hub as an analog and backdrop to the chaotic, corporeal transformation Noora undergoes through cancer and its treatments.Written in the casual, associative style of a female coming-of-age novel,Myceliumexamines German trauma, art school dramas, and the inevitable parsing into winners and losers that her generation undergoes as they enter their mid-thirties.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Sustainability explores questions around the central concept of sustainability: What are its foundations and politics? How do crises challenge sustainability? How is sustainability connected to local and transnational environments? How is sustainability connected to tourism and recreation? Readings by a range of ecologists, urban planners, philosophers, geographers, reporters, artists, and ordinary citizens take up these questions and more. Questions and assignments for each selection provide a range of activities for students. The website for the Spotlight Series offers comprehensive instructor support with sample syllabi and additional teaching resources. The Bedford Spotlight Reader Series is an exciting line of single-theme readers, each reflecting Bedford's trademark care and quality. An editorial board of a dozen compositionists at schools with courses focusing on specific themes assists in the development of the series. Each reader collects thoughtfully chosen selections sufficient for an entire writing course--about 35 pieces--to allow instructors to provide carefully developed, high-quality instruction at an affordable price. Bedford Spotlight Readers are designed to help students from all majors make sustained inquiries from multiple perspectives, opening up topics such as money, food, border crossings, music, humor, subcultures, happiness, monsters, sustainability, and gender to critical analysis. The readers are flexibly arranged in thematic chapters, with each chapter focusing in depth on a different facet of the central topic. The website for the Spotlight Series offers comprehensive instructor support with sample syllabi and additional teaching resources.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Thousands of people visit Wales each year and countless people all over the world are descendants, at least in part, from this small, beautiful part of the British Isles. Yet how many know the history that has made Wales and the Welsh people what they are today? Here is a clear, objective treatment by an American professor of history who has been keenly interested in Wales for many years. The book traces the key forces and developments through all the centuries of the country's history. Although Welsh history is complex and the strong nationalism it has generated among some Welsh people causes controversy, this book presents a balanced, unbiased account. Also includes history on the diverse nature of contemporary Wales.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Moving student writing beyond academic discourse and into larger public spheres is a difficult task, but Christian R. Weisser's study challenges composition instructors to do just that. This highly accessible book does what no other study has attempted to do: place the most current, cutting-edge theories and pedagogies in rhetoric and composition in their intellectual and historical contexts, while at the same time offering a unique, practical theory and pedagogy of public writing for use both inside and outside of the classroom. By positing a theory of the public for composition studies, one which envisions the public sphere as a highly contested, historically textured, multilayered, and sometimes contradictory site, Weisser offers a new approach to the roles that compositionists might assume in their attempts to initiate progressive political and social change. After first providing a historical context that situates composition's recent interest in public writing, Weisser next examines recent theories in composition studies that consider writing an act of social engagement before outlining a more complex theory of the public based on the work of Jurgen Habermas. The resulting re-envisioning of the public sphere expands current conversations in rhetoric and composition concerning the public.…
