DESCRIPTION: Bound in publisher's original blue cloth with elaborate gilt douyble dragon crest to front and gilt titles to spine. 30 plates and 15 in text illustrations from lithographs by Thomas Robert Way. The front paste-down has within the centre a large bookplate with the motto "Crescit Sub Pondere Virtus" and the name J.J. Chapman" and to the rear board "J.J.Chapman Whitby 1907". Deckled page edges. Most pages remain uncut. Language: English. Book Condition: Good: Light wear to corners, edges and creased spine ends. Soiled board margins with a few marks to rear. Sunned and toned spine. Tightly bound with heavily spotted intact endpapers. Firm hinmges. Bookplate to front paste down and signature of same owner to rear paste down dated 1907. Further heavy spotting to front and rear fly pages with light spotting to remaining preliminaries. Spotting to extreme page edges from soiled and spotted text block edge. DJ Condition: No DJ Size: cm by cm. PROVENANCE: Bookplate: J.J. Chapman. J. J. Chapman Whitby could be Joseph John Chapman born on 5 Jul 1837 in Whitby, Yorkshire and died in 1913 at age 76. He was awarded with JP North Riding of Yorkshire. He worked as a Barrister at Law, Middle Temple. He had a residence in 17, St. Hildas Terrace, Whitby, Yorkshire. Joseph married Fanny Simpson, daughter of Henry Simpson. They had three children: Edward Henry, Harold, and Wilfrid Hubert. See pennyghael pdf. AUTHOR: Thomas Way (1861-1913) was an English painter, lithographer and printer, who designed posters for London Underground between 1910 and 1913. He was best known for his topographical lithographs of London.
