Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy with a small ownership sticker. A detailed history of the pioneering years of railway construction in Southland, tracing the development of the province's earliest railways from 1864 to 1878. J. O. P. Watt examines the ambitious schemes that linked Invercargill…, Bluff, Winton and surrounding districts, including the short-lived wooden-rail tramway and the transition to more durable iron rails and the national narrow-gauge system. Drawing on official records, maps and contemporary photographs, the book explores the engineering challenges, political decisions and financial pressures that shaped Southland's rail network during its formative years. An authoritative and well-illustrated account, it remains an important reference for students of New Zealand railway and regional history.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: VG+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: VG. 1st. In 1895 a murder trial in Invercargill, NZ's southernmost city, was sensational to the extent that today it remains one of the most notable cases in terms of public interest. Outstanding for two main factors, it was the result of a woman's "baby farming" activities,… which led to her muder conviction and death at the gallows --- the only woman in NZ to have met such a fate. Ostensibly, 'baby farming" was a service for accepting responsibility for unwanted babies, usually illegitimate. These were generally moved "out of district" with the understanding that the infant wouuld be "adopted out." The recipient of the child was paid either a lump sum or a weekly fee. However, the "donor" of the bably took no further interest in its welfare and this made infanticide for a "hardened farmer" a comparatively simple matter. although "adopting out" with about 20 pounds changing hands in the transaction was also tempting. There were some babies unfit, physically or mentally, for adoption and a dispute over "maintenance" for one such a child focused attention on Minnie Dean's activities. One result of this was a request for health authorities to examine the Dean's "infant boarding house." At times the tiny, delapidated Dean house was "home" for 10 children, aged from six weeks to 11years, as well as Minnie, her husband and their adopted adult daugter. Almost inevitably death occurred among the unwanted infants, although it was acceoted that the Dean chilldren were well fed and clothed. One death led to an inquest which found that this was due to natural causes, but caused the overcrowded home becoming a local issue with limits on numbers and inspections by the authorities recommended. When several baby bodies were located on the property this led to Minnie Dean's arrest, trial, to death by hanging in August 1895. In his book J O P Watt bullds a complete and absorbing account of the events leading up to the trial, a detailed description of the proceedings, her excecution and subsequent controversey regrading the trial finding. First editiion of 1973, 82 pages illustrated with b/w sketchs of the scene of the crime, ink drawings, the court proceedings, reproduction of a ducument signed by Minnie Dean, plus 12 ink portraits of the accused, witnesses and judicial figures in the court proceedings.plus b/w photo of the Supreme Court where the trial took place. Book condition is VG+ with black hard covers with gilt front titles, internally excellent, no inscriptions. The wrap-round DJ featues a number of the illustrations used in the book, VG with few short tears to upper/lower jacket edges. A first class copy of a scarce book. Drawings, Photo, Sketches, Potraits (ilustrador).
