Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Limited Edition. One of 1500, quarto size, 67 pp., signed by Bruce Chandler, with slipcase and LEC Club Letter. Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, 1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer who, despite not being fluent in English until his twenties, is regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He wrote stories and novels that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutible universe and often brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. This story is somewhat akin to "Lord Jim" and "Nostromo", as the protagonist faces a difficult moral decision and chooses what, to many, appears to be the "wrong" decision. The plot is based on a real incident which occurred in 1880, on the British clipper ship the "Cutty Sark". With three incredibly lovely prints by Bruce Chandler, each made with a wide range of printing techniques, including aquatint, line etching, drypoint roulette, and burnishing. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in dark-blue Thai silk with black Nigerian goat leather label with gilt lettering on the cover, the three illustrations by Bruce Chandler (the first of which is a double-page illustration) bound in throughout; set in monotype Van Dijck on Magnani mould-made letterpress paper, binding quarto size (10 1/4" by 7 1/4"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xiv [2, blanks], [1-2] 3-49 [1, blank] [1, colophon], signed by Bruce Chandler at the colophon, issued in an edition of 1500 copies, this no. 1198. Housed in a black cloth box lined with dark-blue Thai silk made by the Jovonis Bookbindery with black leather label with gilt lettering on spine, loosely laid in is the LEC Letter, one sheet folded to four pages and folded once more for mailing, printed in blue and black. ___CONDITION: Book is in fine condition, silk binding is bright and free of any markings or wear, a strong, square text block with solid hingers, the interior is clean and bright, and the volume is entirely free of prior owner markings; as new.
