Eva Watson-Schutze (1867-1935) was a founding member with Alfred Stieglitz of the Photo-Secession movement. As a young woman she was most interested in painting and was a student of Thomas Eakins. After pursuing photography for some 20 plus years, she returned to painting in the 1920's. She was known for her pictorialist style. He was involved with his brother in banking and in 1906 he married Anita Risse. With his family, in 1912 he fled the revolutionary forces in Mexico and settled in the United States. For most of the remainder of his life he lived in Woodstock, New York and worked as a successful investment banker. For many years he was a supporter of the German government but, despite many attempts on the part of the American government, he was never convicted of being a spy. In 1942 he joined the American side and worked in the OSS. His sister-in-law, Adie Estebena (Risse), also settled in the artists colony of Byrdcliffe in Woodstock where she occupied herself as a sculptor. …
