Cloth. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Man's Means to His End.Slight wear to edge of D/J. The Central concern of this book is the possibility that twentieth-century man may eliminate himself from the face of the earth. If he should stop short of this conclusive dead… end, he may nevertheless go far enough, in his pride and in his folly, to destroy the social structures to which we commonly give the name of civilization. Thus the distinguished scientist-stateman who is the author of this book begins an examination of the dangers we are now facing and what we must do if we are to achieve better ends of our own choice. 221 pp. Plastic protective covering. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Near Fine; see scans and description. Chicago: Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science, Inc. The scarce January,1950 issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, that being Volume VI, Number 1. The famous and historic Doomsday Clock - shown on each cover since 1947, two years…after the publication's inception - here shows the time to be three minutes of midnight as of mid-1950. That's about as close as it ever got, and one can see from the article titles (see scan of contents) that these always-good-citizen scientists - the first group to publish against Nuclear weapons in a scholarly manner - were extremely skittish in early '50. Quarto, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 32 pp. (pages1 through 32 for the annual volume, pages then being numbered after that fashion of the time). Near Fine, with no salient flaws at all. Orange cover - using a golden-age-of-sci-fi style of font in the case of this particular issue - is vivid, and very modest age-toning to interior pages is less than would ordinarily be expected. See all scans. Solidly bound and bright. A stout example. Established in 1945 by biophysicist Eugene Rabinowitch and physicist Hyman Goldsmith in response to a correctly-perceived demand for nuclear information at the time by the general public, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is without doubt the most historically significant non-technical publication on the subject of "'global security and public policy issues related to the dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, climate change,[2] and emerging technologies and diseases". Hence, over the years, BAS has become a geopolitical instrument, rather than a nuclear watchdog alone. This early in the bulletin's history, full-size illustrations were rare; here, only the ads on the inside covers are full page. But where else would you see an ad declaring 'The Fume Hood of the Future.is Yours Today'? That's in case you have you have issues handling your radioactive isotopes. See scan of that ad. Feature articles in this vintage1950 issue: The City of Washington and an Atomic Bomb Attack; Conquest of the United States by Germany; AEC Reactor Program; The Perils of Being Important; Role of the National Laboratories; International Control of Atomic Energy; Atomic Armistice; more. See scan of contents. Contributors include Sir Robert Watson-Watt; Hans J. Morgenthau; Samuel K. Allison; Henry D. Smyth; Leo Szilard; David F. Cavers; Cuthbert Daniel and John L. Balderston; Francis W. Carpenter; the editors and others. Very, very scarce piece of activist history at the beginning of a tense era. The original monthly softcover issue, and in superior condition. Ships in a new, sturdy, protective box, of course - not a bag. LPR34.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Three Steps to Victory, A Personal Account by Radar's Greatest Pioneer, by Sir Richard Watson-Watt. First edition, published in 1952 by Oldham's Press of London. Printed in Great Britain. The red clothbound boards show general signs of age, though there is no evidence of fading… to the spine. The gilt lettering of the spine is not the clearest, but is perfectly readable. The spine itself is somewhat loose, but it is in good condition nonetheless and fine for reading and storing. No previous inscriptions or ex-library marks. Frontispiece is an image of the author in his home. The pages are all slightly age toned, but the title page is in good condition with only the slightest suggestions of foxing. All illustrations clear, bright and in very good condition. A good copy of a fascinating account of the development of radar by the leading figure in the development of RADAR, the invention which is given much credit for winning the Battle of Britain and the Second World War as a whole. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. The Oxford History of England. Complete in 17 Volumes, including the Consolidated Index. Edited by Sir George Clark. Published by Oxford University Press (Clarendon Press), Oxford. A complete uniform set of this landmark historical series, comprising the full sequence from Roman Britain through t…o the end of the Second World War, together with the Consolidated Index volume. The volumes in this edition appear to have been issued between approximately 1985 and 1991 in matching navy blue cloth bindings. First conceived under the general editorship of Sir George Clark, The Oxford History of England became one of the most respected and influential collaborative histories of England ever published. Written by many of the leading historians of their respective generations, the series provides a continuous scholarly narrative spanning nearly two thousand years of English history. Several volumes became standard works in their fields and remain widely consulted today. Complete sets are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in such uniform and well-preserved condition. The set comprises: IA. Roman Britain, by Peter Salway (1981); IB. The English Settlements, by J. N. L. Myres (1985); II. Anglo-Saxon England, c.550-1087, by Sir Frank Stenton (Third Edition, 1971); III. From Domesday Book to Magna Carta, 1087-1216, by Austin L. Poole (Second Edition, 1955); IV. The Thirteenth Century, 1216-1307, by Sir Maurice Powicke (Second Edition, 1962); V. The Fourteenth Century, 1307-1399, by May McKisack (1959); VI. The Fifteenth Century, 1399-1485, by E. F. Jacob (1961); VII. The Earlier Tudors, 1485-1558, by J. D. Mackie (1952); VIII. The Reign of Elizabeth, 1558-1603, by J. B. Black (Second Edition, 1959); IX. The Early Stuarts, 1603-1660, by Godfrey Davies (Second Edition, 1959); X. The Later Stuarts, 1660-1714, by Sir George Clark (Second Edition, 1956); XI. The Whig Supremacy, 1714-1760, by Basil Williams, revised by C. H. Stuart (Second Edition, 1962); XII. The Reign of George III, 1760-1815, by J. Steven Watson (1960); XIII. The Age of Reform, 1815-1870, by Sir Llewellyn Woodward (Second Edition, 1962); XIV. England, 1870-1914, by Sir Robert Ensor (1936); XV. English History, 1914-1945, by A. J. P. Taylor (1965); Consolidated Index, compiled by Richard Raper (1991). Near fine navy blue cloth hardbacks with gilt/silvered titles and decoration to spines. A particularly attractive uniform set. Bindings are sound and square throughout. Covers generally excellent with only occasional light scuffing or minor signs of handling. Text is bright, clean and unmarked across the set, except for some volumes having previous owner's signature to first free blank endpaper. A handsome library of English history, suitable for both reference and display. Text in English. Dimensions: each volume approximately 223mm high x 146mm wide x 25-55mm deep. Weight: approximately 15kg (the set - unpacked). A heavy set - no extra postage charge required, other than the cost stated, for UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. For other countries, extra postage may be payable - please enquire for a quote.

The recipient of this letter is the surgeon Henry William Robert Davey (1798-1870) of Yarmouth, son of surgeon Henry Sallows Davey (1781-1855) of Beccles; and the 'Mr. Bell' mentioned in it is Sir Charles Bell, who had taught Davey ten years before at Theatre of Anatomy, Great Windmill Street. 2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condit…ion, lightly aged, with a strip cut away from the outside edge of the second leaf, which carries two postmarks and Watson's address to 'Henry Davey Esqre | Tavistock Hotel | Covent Garden'. Twenty-one lines of neatly-written text. He begins by apologising for being 'in such a hurry' when Davey called at his house that morning that he 'did not immediately open my Friend Rennie's letter In fact I was just starting, as you perhaps saw, to visit a Patient in the Country'. Should Davey 'not have succeeded in meeting with Mr. Bell' Watson will have 'great pleasure in shewing you the London University'. He can 'with difficulty' suggest a time when he is 'sure to be found at home', but he 'must be at the Middlesex Hospital' on the following day between noon and one o'clock, 'where I shall be very glad to see you if you think I can be useful to you'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

Both documents 1p., folio. Both in good condition, on lightly-aged laid paper, the first with pin-holes from its attachment to another item. The first letter relates to 'the Expences incurred in constructing the Royal Military Canal', with reference to a 'Letter from Sir B[rook]. Watson Bt' and 'Lieut. Col. Brown's Accounts for…expenditure'. The second letter again deals with communications from Watson and Brown, the latter 'enclosing Accounts & Vouchers for the Expenditure on the Royal Military Canal & Rampart'. The Royal Military Canal, conceived by Lieutenant-Colonel John Brown as a defence against invasion, runs for 28 miles between Seabrook near Folkestone and Cliff End near Hastings. In mid-1805, due to the slow progress of the work, the contractors and consultant engineer John Rennie had been dismissed and replaced by the Quartermaster-General's department with Brown in command.
