Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by editor Gronvold to Madame Elisabeth Wasmann (the artist's widow) in black ink, in German, at head of half-title page. Uncredited holograph English translation of the editor's introduction also present (1 small 8vo ruled sheet, recto and verso). Bound in full dark brown morocco, gilt-stamped spine and upper cover, spine with raised bands, covers ruled blind, green/brown floral patterned endpapers, foredges and lower edges untrimmed, dark red silk bookmarker. A very good- copy with slight wear and rubbing to spine (chiefly at head and foot); upper cover detaching at spine edge; some rubbing to extremities (chiefly corners and edges); ex-library label on front attached endpaper, with few pencilled ex-library marks elsewhere; slight starting to few signatures; slight internal browning to edges and endpapers; else a highly desirable presentation copy of a limited edition monograph.14 b/w Illustrations / Plates; Few b/w Vignettes (tailpieces).

Ersten künstlerischen Unterricht erhielt Wasmann bei dem Hamburger Maler Christoffer Suhr (…1771-1842); 1824-1828 besuchte er die Akademie in Dresden, wo er hauptsächlich die Kurse von Gustav Heinrich Naeke (1786-1835) besuchte. 1829 kehrte er nach Hamburg zurück, hier erhielt er durch eine Stiftung ein mehrjähriges Stipendium , mit dem er von 1829 an sein Studium an der Münchner Akademie fortsetzte. Hier verkehrte er u.a. mit den Hamburger Künstlern Victor Emil Jansen (1807-1845) und Julius Oldach (1804-1830). Ein Asthmaleiden zwang ihn, ein milderes Klima aufzusuchen und er zog 1830 nach Obermais bei Meran in Tirol. Hier entstanden auf Wanderungen Ölstudien der südlichen Landschaft. 1832 folgte eine Reise nach Rom, wo er drei Jahre blieb. Er schloß sich dort besonders an Emil Janssen an, mit dem er 1833 und 1834 Studienwanderungen durch die Albaner- und Sabinerberge unternahm, sowie an Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869), unter dessen Einfluß er zum Katholizismus übertrat. 1835 ging Wasmann nach München, kehrte aber, da er sich dort keine Existenz aufbauen konnte, 1839 nach Südtirol zurück. Hier war er ein gesuchter Porträtmaler. 1843-1846 lebte er wieder in Hamburg und heiratete im selben Jahr. Das Paar zog noch 1846 dauerhaft nach Meran, das er während vierzig Jahren nur mehr für einzelne Reisen nach Deutschland verließ. Die religiösen Darstellungen, die er von nun an vornehmlich schuf, treten an Bedeutung hinter das Werk seiner frühen Schaffenszeit zurück. Wasmann hat um die Mitte der sechziger Jahre eine Selbstbiographie geschrieben, die gegen die Mitte der neunziger Jahre von Bernd Grönvold (1859-1924), dem Entdecker und Sachwalter des Werks Wasmanns, aufgefunden und 1896 ediert wurde, aber erst 1915 bei der zweiten Auflage allgemeine Beachtung fand. Die Bedeutung von Wasmanns Werk liegt in seinen unmittelbaren, intensiv erlebten und persönlich empfundenen Landschaftsstudien, in denen er sich vor allem mit der Wirkung des Lichts und den atmosphärischen Gegebenheiten auseinandersetzte. Mit ihnen hat er kurz nach Carl Blechen (1798-1840) und gleichzeitig mit Christian E. B. Morgenstern (1805-1867) und Christian Friedrich Gille (1805-1899) die deutsche Freilichtmalerei vorweggenommen. (Vgl. P. Vignau-Wilberg, Stiftung Oskar Reinhart Winterthur.
