Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st. Cloth, xxi, 237 pages, [6] leaves of plates, illustrations (some colour); 26 cm. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. *** "Abel G. ('Buck') Warshawsky (1883-1962) followed a familiar path for an early twentieth century artist: young talent nurtured at a local art school (in his case the Cleveland Institute of Art), study at the Art Students League in New York, then France and the ferment of new ideas, new techniques, new aesthetics. Confined by an accident in the mid-1930s, he wrote an account of his life up to that time, but when he recovered enough to take his paints and easel outdoors again, he left the manuscript in a trunk where it remained until after his death thirty years later. Now edited for publication, Warshawsky's memoir is not only the autobiography of an engaging personality but a valuable first person addition to accounts of expatriate life during the heyday of the American art colony in Paris. Warshawsky set down what he wanted to remember: the early yearnings and frustrations of art, the thrill of bohemian life, his candid opinions of comtemporaries -from Winslow Homer, to whom he paid a visit as an awe-struck young student, to Picasso and Modigliani, whom he considered madmen. For Warshawsky remained an Impressionist even when artistic styles were moving in other directions. His views of the changing art scene during his creative years, though he was eventually a conservative critic and wrote in the somewhat elaborate style of his day, tell us much about what it was like to live through those turbulent years in the history of art. / Ben L. Bassham is Associate Professor of Art History at Kent State University and author of The Theatrical Photographs of Napoleon Sarony, also published by the KSU Press. For The Memories of an American Impressionist he has provided not only judicious editing of a once-sprawling manuscript, but an expanded index including biographical details on Buck Warshawsky's numerous friends and acquaintances." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.
