Perhaps this is due to having… been the son and grandson as well as the father of illustrious surgeons. Yet by his own accomplishments, Mason Warren should stand alone. His contributions were more than isolated surgical feats. Systematically, he explored the possibilities of reconstructive surgery. Through his techniques and writings and his prominence in American medicine, he made his profession aware of what this kind of surgery could offer the patient" (Goldwyn, "Jonathan Mason Warren and His Contribution to Plastic Surgery", in McDowell, p. 466; see pp. 460-66). "In the present work, Warren discusses his work in plastic surgery, including rhinoplasty and staphylorrhaphy. He was especially expert at repairing clefts of the palate, having observed Dieffenbach and Roux while in Europe and being familiar with his father's work. The book also contains chapters covering the head and neck, chest, genitourinary system, abdomen, arteries and veins, tumors, injuries and diseases of the nerves, and anesthetics" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1762). See Garrison-Morton 5743.3 for Warren's 1837 paper, the "first rhinoplasty reported in the United States"; and Garrison-Morton 5745 for his 1842 paper on "the first operation for closure of complete clefts of the palate." "The introduction of a foreign body into the larynx, or trachea, is an accident generally attended with much terror and distress at the time,…and often followed by symptoms of an alarming, and sometimes of a fatal, character. The occurrence of this accident is rendered more frequent, both by the heedlessness of children, and the foolish habit indulged in by many grown persons of keeping pins, nails, and other like bodies, in the mouth. A question arises in the mind of the surgeon called to an instance of this kind, as to the propriety of opening the windpipe, and attempting the extraction of the foreign body without delay. If the nature of the symptoms be urgent, and immediate suffocation is threatened, there is no alternative but to proceed at once to the operation. But if the violent paroxysm, which at first threatened life, has subsided, and the substance has settled into one of the bronchial tubes, causing only occasional disturbance, or if as in children some doubt rests on the account of the accident, the question becomes one of more difficult solution. One or two remarkable operations of late years have called the attention of the medical public to this subject, but as yet no definite rule of action has been laid down. With the purpose of assisting in this object, the following cases are now given to the profession." Jonathan Mason Warren (1811-1867) was a Boston medical doctor, believed to have been the first to administer anesthesia to a child during surgery. He received a medical degree from Harvard College in 1832. After studying surgery in Europe for three years, he returned to Boston in 1835 where he worked in general practice. He specialized in reconstructive surgery; he was one of the first surgeons to perform rhinoplasty operations in the United States, and developed ways to close cleft palate through surgery.

First edition. First Edition. Jonathan Mason Warren, son of renowned American surgeon John Collins Warren, made significant contributions to plastic and reconstructive surgery, performing the first rhinoplasty in the United States (see Garrison-Morton 5743.3) and the first operation for closure of complete clefts of the palate (…see Garrison-Morton 5745). "In the present work, Warren discusses his work in plastic surgery, including rhinoplasty and staphylorrhaphy. He was especially expert at repairing clefts of the palate, having observed Dieffenbach and Roux while in Europe and being familiar with his father's work. The book also contains chapters covering the head and neck, chest, genitourinary system, abdomen, arteries and veins, tumors, injuries and diseases of the nerves, and anesthetics" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1762). The chapter on tumors (Chapter IX) contains four sections: "Tumors"; "Tumors in the Parotid Region"; "Leucocythaemia"; and "Operations for Cancer." "Through his techniques and writings and his prominence in American medicine, [Warren] made his profession aware of what this kind of surgery could offer the patient" (Goldwyn, p. 466). Fields (1817-1881) of the notable publisher Ticknor and Fields on the fly-leaf. A very nice wide-margined copy. First edition of the published annual… address on recent advances in surgery by the eminent Boston physician Jonathan Mason Warren. Warren here provides a summation of a lifetime of surgical practice, offering accounts of minutiae such his method for curing varicocele, which supplanted an "insupportably painful" screw-clamp of Breschet, as well as insights on amputation, excision of tumors, etc. Warren opens his address celebrating his use of "artificial anesthesia" as a replacement for the then-common and frequently fatal use of chloroform on surgical patients. Warren ends his account with a "brief allusion to the vast field for surgical improvement opened up by the gigantic war in which we are now engaged." Warren (1811-1867), the son of noted Massachusetts physician John Collins Warren was a pioneer in surgical practice at the forefront in the use of anesthesia and reconstructive surgery, most notably rhinoplasty and cleft palate surgery.
