Since 1974, Uwe Poth (1946) has been working on a series of assemblages, each of which incorporates sixteen postcards of cities that the artist has visited. These postcards are consistently ordered in the same pattern. Four rows of four cards each are joined together, with each card being turned 180° relative to the card beside or below it. Systematic operations are a fixed feature of Poth s work. While the basic point of departure is a simple system, the objective of this process is always a surprising new image. Poth has created a total of over 140 assemblages since then. In terms of their number, the combined works actually refer to the Pantheon in Rome. Under the dome (which features 140 coffers) of this majestic ancient building, one finds the tomb of the painter Raphael. With this group of 140 exceptionally beautiful assemblages, made over the course of 37 years, Uwe Poth has managed to create his own roof of the world. With texts of Erik Bos of Galerie Nouvelles Images and Arie Hartog, director of the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen (Germany). Especially for this book René Huigen wrote a beautiful poem on the painter Rafaël.
