Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Acceptable. 1st Edition. 243 pages. 185 x 125 mm. Two neat handwritten lines on title page: [?]ilan [?Thau?]. Second handwritten line: "By By Rev. Wm Ware." Original back board and original spine with the original paper label BUT LACXKS FRONT BOARD and and all the pages have a light water stain. First edition of this popular and frequently reprinted epistolary novel set during the campaign of Zenobia, ruler of Palmyra, to make herself Roman empress (c. 271 C.E.). William Ware (1797-1852) was a Unitarian minister and literatus. The first nine letters appeared in the Knickerbocker Magazine. The Author, under the name of Piso, tells of his visit to Palmyra, the ancient Syrian city that was a Roman outpost, at the time of its greatest expansion under the reign of Queen Zanobia. Piso witnesses the fall of the city during the conquest of Lucius Domitius Aurelian and relates the events through his letter to Marcus Curtius at Rome. The last blanks are filled with penciled calculations and might be the writing of someone in the 19th century trying to calculate how much money he'll have at retirement.
