Profusely illustrated. *** "This groundbreaking book traces the history of portraiture as a site of radical artistic experimentation, as it shifted from a genre based on mimesis to one stressing instead conceptual and symbolic associations between artist and subject. Featuring over 100 colour illustrations of works by artists from Charles Demuth, Marcel Duchamp, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O'Keeffe to Janine Antoni, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Roni Horn, Jasper Johns, and Glenn Ligon, this timely publication probes the ways we think about and picture the self and others. With particular focus on three periods during which non-mimetic portraiture flourished - 1912-25, 1961-70, and 1990-the present - the authors investigate issues related to technology, sexuality, artist networks, identity politics, and social media, and explore the emergence of new models for the visual representation of identity. Taking its title from a 1961 work by Robert Rauschenberg - a telegram that stated, 'This is a portrait of Iris Clert if I say so' - this book unites paintings, sculpture, photography, and text portraits that challenge the genre in significant, often playful ways and question the convention, as well as the limits, of traditional portrayal." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Director's foreword; This is a portrait if I say so: identity in American art, 1912 to today, by Anne Collins Goodyear, Jonathan Frederick Walz, and Kathleen Merrill Campagnolo; An American prelude to the abstract portrait, by Dorinda Evans; Portraiture "at the service of the mind": American modernism, representation, and subjectivity from the armory show to the Great Depression, by Jonathan Frederick Walz; In the company of cultural provocateurs: radical portraiture in the 1960s, by Kathleen Merrill Campagnolo; On the birth of the subject and the defacement of portraiture, by Anne Collins Goodyear; Catalogue. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Quarto. Hardcover. Illustrated boards, no jacket as issued. 335 pages : illustrations (some color), color map ; 30 cm"In a collaboration between curators at The Columbus Museum and the Chrysler Museum of Art, Alma W. Thomas: Everything is Beautiful, works toward a primary objective: to introduce the Thomas-related materials housed at The Columbus Museum to a broader public, and to demonstrate how those materials reshape the narratives surrounding the artist. The wealth of material in The Columbus Museum's collection-from student work of the 1920s and marionettes from the 1930s, to home furnishings, ephemera, and little-known works on paper-offers a robust, but until now untold, account of Thomas's artistic journey. Taking cues from Thomas's wide-ranging interests and her broad network of collaborators and supporters, our museums also sought a scholarly approach that resonated with the artist's own disregard for silos, borders, and other arbitrary limitations. Assembling an interdisciplinary advisory committee of more than twenty scholars of diverse backgrounds and experiences, the curators convened a two-day gathering at the University of Maryland Center for Art and Knowledge at The Phillips Collection in January 2020 to illuminate varied aspects of Thomas's creativity and amplify the show's interdisciplinary approach. By applying interdisciplinary approaches to a range of artistic objects, the overall project presents new insights into Thomas's diverse forms of creativity while offering an inspiring look at how to lead a rich and beautiful life"--. Very Good+. Light bumping to front cover, otherwise close to new.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. A sweeping retrospective of Alma W. Thomass wide-reaching artistic practice that sheds new light on her singular search for beauty Achieving fame in 1972 as the first Black woman to mount a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Alma W. Thomas (18911978) is known for her large abstract paintings filled with irregular patterns of bright colors. This insightful reassessment of Thomass life and work reveals her complex and deliberate artistic existence before, during, and after the years of commercial and critical success, and describes how her innovative palette and loose application of paint grew out of a long study of color theory. Essays trace Thomass journey from semirural Georgia to international recognition and situate her work within the context of the Washington Color School and creative communities connected to Howard University. Featuring rarely seen theatrical designs, sculpture, family photographs, watercolors, and marionettes, this volume demonstrates how Thomass pursuit of beauty extended to every facet of her lifefrom her exuberant abstractions to the conscientious construction of her own persona through community service, teaching, and gardening. A sweeping retrospective of Alma W. Thomass wide-reaching artistic practice that sheds new light on her singular search for beauty Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. Washington, DC-based artist Linn Meyers (born 1968) is best known for her hand-drawn lines and tracings for large-scale installations. This book provides a comprehensive survey of her site-specific wall drawings in museums and galleries since 2000, and of Meyers' intricate preparatory drawings and plans. Requiring much stamina, these projects involve drawing in the space over the course of days, sometimes weeks, accumulating lines into dense, intricate compositions. This scale allows Meyers to respond to architectural spaces and magnifies the performativity of her process. On Meyers' Hammer Museum exhibition, Senior Curator Anne Ellegood wrote: "the sense of being present while viewing the work is also amplified at this larger scale . to see a wall drawing is to be surrounded by it and to feel oneself to be part of the work.".
