He is credited with introducing the term biological diversity to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world. Strachan met Rhoades after the latter joined the faculty at Bishop's Stortford College, a boys' public school in Hertfordshire, where Strachan also taught. The two became good friends, as evidenced by their extensive correspondence.
