Decent copy, no dust jacket.

Condición: Good. No Edition Stated. 224 pages. Yellow and blue pictorial dust jacket over blue cloth. From the personal library of previous owner, with expected ownership plates and inscriptions. Pages are lightly tanned at the edges, with light foxing. Binding has remained firm. Light tape marks to endpapers and pastedowns. Occasional thumb marks to pages edges. Boards have slight shelf wear with bumping to corners. Spine ends are a little crushed with light tanning. Light wear to unclipped dust jacket with tears, nicks and creases to spine, edge and corners. Light tanning to spine and edges.

Paperback. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Paperback edition, looks like a proof copy (or advanced reading copy), with plain brown card covers and just the title, authors and publisher shown on front cover, but no mention of proof copy . Some scuffing to spine ends, ink stamp on front cover, title page and on a few inner pages (Rotary Club of Wellington, NZ), but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this soft-cover book. No publication date shown, but rev of title page has some partially erased printing on which I can make out Jazz Book Club, so that would suggest 1957. About a third of the book consists of a biography of the Jazz trumpeter "King" Joe Oliver (1885-1938), the rest mostly with a discography of his many recordings. 200pp, 5 b&w illustrations. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

The contents are fine and unmarked. The d/w is unclipped and fair with some soiling, tanning and general wear. Now in a protective cover. Scans available if required.

Near fine first edition thus inscribed by "Beau Jack" Maclean Dalziel, a student of King Oliver, noted for his adaptation of Oliver's use of mutes, dated "Thursday, June 28, 1990" and signed " 'Beau Jack' Maclean Dalziel, King Oliver's last protege." Binding square and tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Some bumping to spine ends, corners. Some light rubbing. Else fine.

This is a manuscript copy of Allen and Rust's excellent look at the life, work, and recordings of the great jazz cornet player, bandleader, and composer. 162 mimeographed pages in a black binder. Very good copy with minor wear. Label attached to spine of binder with some loss but title and authors' names intact. Very scarce.

This edition has many more photographs + special contributions by Frank Drigg's, Howard Rye, Max Vreede and others. This copy is signed by Laurie Wright on the title page. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 437 pp.

Allen, 168 Cedar Hill Ave, Belleville I, New Jersey, U S A' In addition there some underlinings of titles and very small annotations to dates in pencil, which suggest an intimate knowledge of biographical details. Rear pastedown has further small, neat notes. The name and address of Walter C. Allen and additional pencil notes suggest strongly that this was the author's own copy. LAID IN, as pictured, is a very neat, detailed list written in ink on reverse of a portion of map of the Norfolk coastline, dated 1955. Entitled: 'OLIVER'S CREOLE JAZZ BAND : RECORDS, 1923', it is divided into columns showing, under 'Maker Number', issue numbers from GENNETT (Star Piano Company), OKEH, COLUMBIA, PARAMOUNT. Followed by columns showing Title, Date, Matrix No., Reissues Number, and Personnel Details for each. Also LAID IN, pages from The Listener dated 6 August 1981, with a double page article by Russell Davies about King Oliver, entitled ' His memorial is in the jazz pubs and clubs of England', and notes that Russell Davies presented 'Oh, Play that Thing' on Radio 3 (next week - Lester Young). The newspaper is browning where it is folded, but intact and perfectly readable. CONTENTS: xii + 224; tight, bright and clean with only the aforementioned light pencil annotations. With 2 x 4pp sections of b/w photos. In original decorative dustwrapper, unclipped - 21s, with some moderate evidence of use, now presenting well in clear, removable protective sleeve. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Condición: Very Good. One of the first, and still one of the best, monographs written about the seminal New Orleans cornetist, Louis Armstrong's "Papa Joe." This is a virtually mint copy of the First Edition, in dust jacket. It was the property of Armstrong's later clarinetist, Joe Muranyi, whose name is inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper.
