In the "Editor's Table" of the September issue, the editor writes of West Point: "the annual appropriation for the support of the Academy is about $160,000 -- enough to found and endow a college in some part of the country every year! All this outlay is simply for the purpose of educating some two hundred and fifty young men in the science of war! How much more glorious would it be if our "model republic" would devote that annual expenditure of $160,000 to the establishment of a university in some one of our rapidly multiplying new states and territories!".
