Bumping and rubbing to edges and corners. Centre third of spine containing title, author and vol. no. intact.Title text clean with none of the gilding missing. However, the lower and upper thirds of the spine leather are detatched and missing. Original brown full leather cover. Retains much of the original gilt border and all of the intricaqte blind stamping on front and rear cover. Marbled covers and end papers. Internally it is complete, nice and tight. This is an extra large paper copy with two examples of each print - both on india paper, one marked Proof - the other a proof before letters. There is some spotting to some of the plates and staining to the edges of the first few plates. In old half leather binding which is rather worn. Inner hinges reinforced with leather. Ink owner's name of John Farr to the front free end paper. Pages here measure approximately 46.5x30 cm where in the large paper edition they are 35x25cm. With 15 steel engravings and woodcuts after drawings by Charles Radclyffe, including a frontispiece and vignette title page, each with a tissue guard. Good-sized print on good paper. Contemporary tan full calf with raised bands, gilt titles to red label, and further gilt tooling to spine. Also with Gray's Eton memorial and Eton College Chapel stamped in gilt to boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. Black ink ownership to first blank. Heavy spotting to plates and facing leaves, otherwise quite clean internally. Much of the gilt decoration on the spine has been rubbed away, but the title label is unaffected. Light wear to binding overall. Very good. A decidedly deluxe edition of Gray's poetry, with nearly half the volume consisting of additional material, including a Life of the poet, some literary criticism, and even a series of 'introductory stanzas' by the Reverend John Moultrie. Likely bound to be used interchangeably as a gift or prize book, it contains no evidence of a dedication or prize inscription.…
